Here are a few survival tips I’ve learned along the way: 1?? Stay Curious: Whether you're handling 18th-century artifacts or planning a modern exhibit, learning never stops. Dive into new research, tech, or ideas—you’ll never get bored! 2?? Be a Team Player: Museums thrive on collaboration. Conservators, educators, curators, and front-line staff all bring something unique to the table. Celebrate that. 3?? Adaptability is Key: From last-minute exhibition changes to power outages during an event (it happens!), flexibility is your superpower. 4?? Celebrate the Small Wins: Sometimes, it’s the little things—like an enthusiastic visitor or a successful school program—that remind you why you’re here. And most importantly: 5?? Remember the Mission: Every tough day is worth it when you think about the lives you’re inspiring and the history you’re preserving for future generations.??

NEW WEBSITE LAUNCH It's with great pride that I share my new website with my LinkedIn community. ?? When I set up The Experience Business in 2012, no one was talking about Audience Experience Design and some thought me a bit mad to set up a company that focussed on all things #audienceexperience. 12 years on and it is fast rising up the agenda of many arts and cultural organisations, though the specific skills and mindsets required to drive it are not yet mainstreaming. So I persist, and my new website offers some lovely peeks into the work I do in this field. Since then, my work has grown and evolved in exciting and unforeseen ways: - working with #curators on human-centred exhibition conceptualisation and #exhibitiondesign - introducing #designthinking processes into #capitaldevelopment - co-developing #brandexperiences and #brandworlds with major performing arts venues - working with performing artists to explore how their purpose, practice and audience experience inter-relate as a means to support informed risk taking - and running a number of flagship #communityengagement programmes that places the participant experience front and centre At the heart of all this is a profound belief that the true value of the arts and cultural sector resides in the human experience of everything it is and does. This being the case, audience experience is a strategic consideration, and so must be intentionally conceptualised, designed and managed. I'll be writing more about this as I embark for the first-time in a bit of blogging. Just wrapped up an inspiring meeting with the team at Fresh Arts (Daral, Angela, and Julia Barbosa Landois), learning about their annual Fresh Arts Summit. This event has been a big asset for Houston's creative community since 2019, focusing on entrepreneurial skills and community building for visual and performing artists. It got me thinking about the bigger picture of creative professional development in Houston: ?? How can we expand support for our diverse creative workforce beyond traditional arts? ?? What opportunities exist to bridge the gap between creative fields and other industries? ?? How might we leverage Houston's unique position as a hub for energy, medicine, and space to drive innovation in creative sectors? I believe there's immense potential in broadening our approach to creative professional development: ?? Cross-industry collaborations could spark new career paths and innovations ??? Enhanced creative workforce development could attract and retain top talent in Houston ?? Funding Round Now Open?Round 1, 2025 The Ian Potter Cultural Trust - Emerging Artist Grants program offers grants of up to $15,000 to assist talented emerging and early-career artists in taking up professional development opportunities, usually overseas. Had a great meeting today and thought I’d share my top 3 learnings with you all: 1. It’s not just about what you know, it’s about who you know. Your network is one of your greatest assets—put it to work! 2. Think big. Small thinking doesn’t lead to big opportunities. Always aim higher. 3. Talking about what you do with others helps you refine your approach and sparks new ideas. Fresh inspiration often comes from the most unexpected conversations. P.S. Did you know that London is home to over 170 museums? I’ve only been to about 3 of them ??♂? #MuseumDodger

Who has been to the WNDR Museum in Boston? It presents a variety of interesting visual, auditory and other interactive moments, good for an hour of roaming around and participating with. But one of the main takeaways for me was this neon sign, juxtaposed as it immediately was for me with the more common idiom (platitude) that fortune favors the bold. That idea has never really resonated with me, though I'm not sure I thought to articulate why until I saw this variation, grounded in curiosity. I think curiosity is a component of boldness. Maybe not a requirement, but I suspect a common enough cooccurrence. As I thought about it, though, I reflected on some key differentiators between boldness and curiosity. Boldness has its merits, but it: can be accompanied by recklessness or thoughtlessness; relatedly can overshadow quiet thoughtfulness; or can be falsely equated with ability, competence, or aptitude for leadership. There have been times in my life when I have been bold but I think I prefer to be curious. Curiosity tends to: be open to growth and learning; serve without pretense or agenda; have the potential for collaboration because we can be curious together; seem contingent on some level of thoughtfulness. At this moment in time, with ALL that's swirling in the world, and all that is keeping me up at night, I am hopeful that we'll see examples of fortune favoring the curious among people who may be looking for a better, but not exclusive, way to do great things.
