https://lnkd.in/gnYpjvNW Earlier this week, I was fortunate enough to spend several days with visionary leaders from Healthcare, Higher Education, and government organizations at the Roosevelt Strategic Council Facilities & Campus Energy summit in the DC area. As an industry, we talk a lot about the need to advance technology in buildings to achieve business and sustainability goals. This is where leaders come together to learn from one another, collaborate, and start solving real-world problems with practical solutions that get results! Shout out to Monica Mckenzie at RSC for putting on, yet another, outstanding event! I had many wonderful conversations and learned a great deal throughout the summit. I am looking forward to continuing those conversations with many of the Healthcare and Higher Education leaders I met throughout the event. These were some of my takeaways from the event. Some of this may not be "popular", but this is our reality today: 1. There are more ways to fund sustainability projects than you can imagine, and lots of free money to help fund them. Find a good tax advisor. 2. Cybersecurity of OT systems needs serious attention - The complex, systems we install to address the future of our climate, create new targets for cyber attackers. Some have already been exploited resulting in damage to our infrastructure that puts humans directly at risk. 3. Leaders are ready to embrace AI as a core part of their business but don't know where to start. 4. Some decarbonization laws can't be enforced due to limited electrical grid capacity. 5. Electrification only reduces carbon when the generation source is sustainable, and 60% of it comes from burning something. 6. Data is becoming more available, but its value is more difficult to capture as complexity increases. 7. Critical facilities like hospitals cannot sacrifice the resiliency of on-site fossil fuels for the sake of decarbonization. What good is a hospital if it can't stay open to take care of people? 8. Almost half of the electricity generated off-site is lost during transmission. 8. We have made more progress in the last two years than most people think. Danielle Radden, Craig E. Recent high-tech growth across upstate has been driven by a variety of factors, including significant R & D investment by the state and the aggressive site preparedness work of counties and regional economic development organizations. But another key factor is often overlooked — the availability of an abundance of power, along with the water and wastewater capacity required by microchip fabs, life science manufacturing, data centers and related supply chain businesses. Like any other resource, energy is finite. If we want to continue our upward trajectory, we must ensure continued access to, and reliability of, the power these sectors demand — especially as the state navigates its way toward its clean energy mandates.

When it comes to truly engaging communities, business as usual is just not good enough. This week I had the honor of joining leaders in academia, energy, government, and environmental justice at a Georgia Institute of Technology-hosted symposium on advancing direct air capture (DAC) for community benefit and decarbonization. These conversations flipped the typical focus on DAC – and the energy transition – by placing the very real challenges of delivering community benefits through clean energy technology deployment front and center. A panel discussion with Pamela Fann, CDP, CDT of @Integrated Solutions Solutions, Kasia Kornecki, Ph.D. of The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, Henry McKoy of U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and Pamela Tomski of ENTECH Strategies LLC highlighted the human impacts of the energy transition. From pairing community engagement with the early stages of technology development to identifying benefits that truly matter by speaking early and often with those affected, the discussion brought to the forefront critical considerations surrounding clean energy innovation. The bottom line… Even the most beneficial energy transition will leave footprints along the path – footprints impacting the economy, environment, communities, and society. Through intentional collaboration, we can help enable change that improves the quality of life of those affected most. A special thanks to Georgia Tech for bringing a blend of stakeholders together for an important discussion around a community-focused energy transition. Efforts to educate the public about government operations can turn a skeptical public to one that stands behind most government actions and views government positively.
