Why do we use the earth for building? Earth is a magical, natural material that regulates temperature and humidity, making your home healthier without needing air conditioning or chemical insulation.? It also reduces sound, keeps allergies and pests at bay, and uses local resources, minimizing environmental impact.? This ancient method, used by our ancestors, allows you to build your home naturally, with just your hands and feet.? We love this sustainable way of building! ???

What comes to your mind in terms of "Just Streets" when you watch this video below? Summer in the city. Finally cooling down as it was too hot in many places so far. When one knows that for each degree increase in Temperature, air can hold 7% more water vapour, you may imagine how this will pour down to earth one day. What a pitty, when rainfall concentrates above a very local region, the clouds not moving forward. It ends like in Vienna the recent weekend. 114 liters of rain /m2, 94 liters in just one hour. What could be the sustainable solution? As easy as this: nature-based-solutions: vegetation, unsealing streets normally used by cars, giving space to people, bus and bike which need much less paved roads. https://lnkd.in/du-56upd

Great to help with greening Cities, and a wonderful example of how to make things better by not putting down the concrete in the first place. There is a large carbon/energy/resource required to cover things in concrete, then there is a smaller requirement to remove. This is typical of large organisations where huge amounts are wasted on unproductive things. Like covering things in concrete and then removing it. #olympianclimatechampions is addressing this.

Should more places start doing this? Cities around the world are ripping up concrete and letting nature thrive instead! It’s called Depaving and it’s gaining massive momentum as a solution to rising temperatures in urban environments.

This is a great way to create a more beautiful world in cities. The reduction in radiated heat and the water absorption are great benefits. I know that there are always tons of empty lots that could easily become beautiful areas of plants and trees. I think all cities would be more beautiful if they had more nature.

Have you walked out in the streets of Colombo during a sunny day and felt like you’re being literally microwaved alive from the steering heat and humidity coming from all directions? And have you walked on the roads surrounding UOC grounds and Royal College and noticed a difference? While we continue to cut down the urban trees without replacing them, and fill our cities with concrete in the name of development many developped countries are moving in the opposite direction..!! I feel that this strategy is one of the most effective and sustainable ways, not just to manage the rising temperatures in urban areas, but for many other urbanization and environmental issues as well..

Yes, more places should definitely consider depaving and letting nature thrive! Depaving is an innovative solution to mitigate the urban heat island effect, manage stormwater runoff, and create habitats for urban wildlife. By removing concrete and asphalt, cities can: 1. Reduce heat absorption: Concrete and asphalt absorb and retain heat, contributing to higher temperatures in urban areas. Depaving helps to decrease the urban heat island effect. 2. Improve stormwater management: Depaved areas allow rainwater to infiltrate the soil, reducing stormwater runoff and alleviating pressure on drainage systems. 3. Create habitats: Depaving creates opportunities for urban green spaces, parks, and gardens, providing habitats for wildlife and enhancing biodiversity. 4. Promote sustainability: Depaving aligns with sustainable urban planning principles, prioritizing environmental resilience and community well-being. 5. Enhance community engagement: Depaving projects often involve community participation, fostering a sense of ownership and community pride. Cities around the world are already embracing depaving, and it's gaining momentum as a effective solution to address urban environmental challenges. Some notable examples include: - Seattle's "Depave Park" project - Toronto's "Depave Paradise" initiative - Melbourne's "Greening Laneways" program - Rotterdam's "Water-Sensitive Cities" approach As the global movement towards sustainable urban development continues, more cities should consider depaving as a strategic approach to create more livable, resilient, and environmentally conscious urban environments.
