Happy Halloween: We’ve done the math, and it would take approximately 6.5 billion (full-size) Snickers bars to power an average residential building annually. That being said, we recommend pursuing more sustainable energy sources like solar or wind for your building... ???? #SustainableEnergy #GridSolutions #BuildingDecarbonization #NYCBuildings

Every city has a sewer, and the heat in the water flowing through its pipes is an increasingly attractive source of recyclable, affordable, carbon-free energy. So much so that when the National Western Center in downtown Denver installed the nation's largest sewer heat recovery system, which provides 90% of the heating and cooling needs for over 1 million square feet of indoor space, its CEO, Brad Buchanan, called it a new kind of environmental resource. Instead of mineral or water rights, the Center holds sewer thermal energy rights. As Buchanan told NPR, "We have it protected because we're counting on that energy in perpetuity." In the U.S., we flush enough heat down the drain - when we shower, wash dishes, and do the laundry - to heat 30 million homes annually. All that heat - 350 Billion kWh's worth - eventually flows into our waterways and oceans. It's enough energy to melt 3.77 billion tons of ice or 100 million hockey rinks. So, tapping into this massive cache of renewable energy that's always available underneath our buildings and streets becomes all the more urgent and obvious. SHARC Energy provided the sewer heat recovery system now operating in Denver. The company installed a similar system at the 303 Battery Project in Seattle, which contributed to it becoming the first multifamily tower in the world certified as Net Zero Energy by the International Living Future Institute. That's why we're thrilled to have Lynn Mueller, founder of SHARC and inventor of the technology, as a guest on our most recent episode of the Supercool podcast. Lynn is a builder of the low-carbon future. On Supercool, he shares where his story began: Vancouver.

The green building movement is evolving beyond net-zero to "energy positive" and "carbon positive" projects, reshaping construction's role in climate action. Highlights from the latest developments: ?? Energy Positive: These buildings offset their construction, demolition, and operational energy costs by generating more energy than they consume over their lifetimes. For example, in the Nordic summer, they produce excess solar power that feeds into surrounding homes and businesses. ? Going Beyond Net Zero: Advances in technology and stricter green-building laws are inspiring developers to aim higher—creating structures that positively contribute to energy and carbon cycles. ?? A New Standard: As one developer put it, “Our goal was to leave the planet in a better place than we found it — not an equal place, a better place.” Read more about these innovative projects in Bloomberg by Olivia Rudgard: https://lnkd.in/edWRnh8R #Sustainability #GreenBuildings #ClimatePositive #EnergyPositive #Solar
