And if you ever feel overwhelmed by a large project, remember: "There’s no problem a good hammer can’t solve." Break down a big project into smaller tasks, and each step will bring you closer to your goal. So, as part of my role at Sustainable Engineering, my journey to understanding product life cycle assessment (LCA) begins. Some weeks ago I started discussing LCAs with Environmental Impacts Academy’s managing partner, Poul Lindqvist, in the hope of quelling my confusion about the subject. From my earliest days in engineering and then on through my publishing and software development careers, I have always banged the drum for ‘total cost of ownership’ (TCO) which seemed such a sensible way of making commercial and personal buying decisions. So, as my interests pivoted towards the subject of sustainable product design, I was delighted to encounter what appears to be a supercharged version of TCO, otherwise known as an LCA. Was I right to compare these two processes? Had I confused two separate issues? I put a call into Poul whose organization specializes in LCA training and recruitment. To avoid any further confusion the decision was made for me to take the Environmental Impacts Academy’s Leader’s LCA Online Course—an introduction to sustainable decision-making. I promised Poul I would document my journey through the course, starting with this post. Meet Project Partner 2! envi MV is an environmental technology network from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern that brings together small and medium-sized companies to market their environmental technologies nationally and internationally. The focus is on strengthening the local economy and promoting sustainable developments in the circular economy at home and abroad. The association develops cooperation projects in the field of CE, renewable energies and education. It is qualified in project management, environmental education, public relations and technology transfer and has experience in international projects. In the southern Baltic region, enviMV is engaged in the South Baltic Cleantech Network for cooperation with partners from Sweden, Lithuania and Poland. Within the project PP is engaged especially in the framework of learning - capacity building, sustainability and popularization activities, as well as in development of a toolbox supporting decision-making process.
