What drives someone to write their first investment check? What does investing for the first time EVER feel like? Interested in finding out? Join our founder, Natalie Levy, for our upcoming Office Hours on September 24th! She’ll be answering all your questions about angel investing along with how our investment group operates and how to get involved. When Natalie wrote her first few checks she was thankful to invest alongside other bright, young friends with financial backgrounds. She looked into the people driving the businesses and asked herself about the markets they were going after. Did this look like a product or service that was ACTUALLY needed and in demand? Or was it just an idea without data points? Her portfolio is now 40+ strong (with some solid exits) and she is thrilled to invest alongside others aligned to drive financial influence and a transformation in mindset to bring more equity and influence to the world we live in. Whether you're an active angel investor today or considering the journey we’d love to meet you! You can also check out our YouTube channel and introductory video on angel investing here: https://lnkd.in/gA78xh2N

She's Independent Investments so enjoyed co-hosting a Women's Mastermind session with Colorado BioScience Association (CSBA) last week. We dove into angel investing concepts - from foundational to advanced - alongside touching on an investor mindset. How do you navigate to full confidence to step into angel? JUST START! Investing will change your mindset and investing alongside others is a great way to navigate into new skills. We were thrilled to welcome some of our investment members with healthcare backgrounds including our COO Arieann DeFazio, Idong Essiet-Gibson, PhD, PMP, Simone Otenaike, and Lily Bragg who shared their experiences as angels along with what motivates them to be an angel and how a member-led investment group works. Thanks to Francisca (Francis) Bermea and Rita “Ruta” Sanzgiri, Ph.D. for shaping and co-hosting this session! Let us know if your organization is interested in a workshop!?

Suma Sathyanarayana, our newest team member, began her journey as an Investment Observer with She's Independent. She was so inspired by our mission and loved the hands-on, experiential approach to angel investing so much that she decided to join our core team! Got questions about what it is about She's Independent that inspires folks like Suma or how a member-led investment group works? Or really just anything about how to be involved with She's Independent? Looking forward to welcoming you to another Office Hours next week to answer all your angel investing and investment group questions and just about anything else you’d like to learn about being involved with She’s Independent! All are welcome, whether you're already investing as an angel or not yet an accredited investor ready to allocate checks!

Stepping into money flows and advocating for yourself bring real influence. You can't negotiate equity ownership if you don't understand it. In this hour workshop with our founder and Managing Partner Natalie Levy, we'll walk you through the framework to negotiate anything. We'll break down equity ownership and share real case studies to support executive professionals stepping into new ownership packages and leveling up existing ones. Should you take that advisory or board seat for equity? What's it worth? What you worth in that role? Join us for this workshop to get in the mindset of uncovering value, knowing your worth, and navigating to it. Join our investment group to learn more about aligning with companies and opportunities offering a good risk-reward profile to their investors. > https://lnkd.in/gtQmqrhb See you there! Last week ended on a high note with my completion of the Yale Women on Boards program. It was a great opportunity to network and share learnings with a group of highly accomplished women and talented faculty, with a diverse mix of skillsets and backgrounds. It was both engaging and stimulating! I feel better prepared to step into more high-profile board opportunities that come my way. Don't hesitate to reach out if you think I'd be a good fit ?? #womenonboards #YaleSOM #YaleExecEd #Leadership

Our founder was thrilled to participate in the impactful dialogue in partnership with Silicon Flatirons Center for Law, Technology, and Entrepreneurship led by Henry L. Wright and Brad Bernthal. The event itself was an evening of engaged conversation and energy. We absolutely loved the talk on the topic of authenticity and how bringing your backstory and culture creates an ever more powerful you. Speaking of authenticity, our founder shared some tough personal experiences she faced in navigating to finance to show others what the environment was and what it continues to be. But what’s next? How do we galvanize community members and organizations to change their behavior, success metrics, and teams to reflect a more diverse landscape of leadership and money flows? Don’t wait for the change. Step up. Ask for the role. Try something new. We need more diverse folks in capital and entrepreneurship. There’s no playbook but there are plenty of resources and mentors out there if you look. Have questions? Feel free to comment on this post.

A lot of our members ask about the impact of dilution (your equity position downsizing when more capital is raised.) Sharing a post by investor and friend Rio Hodges below that shares some insight for the founder side. Investors - we’ll be chatting through dilution and other portfolio concepts in our upcoming Intro to Angel miniseries installation next week! All are welcome. See you there > https://lnkd.in/gwJuwT6U #dilution #angelinvestors #womenwhofund #womenwhoinvest

    Early Stage VC @ Antler

If you go down the VC route, startup dilution is inevitable. It's hard though to understand how it actually stacks up long term. Typically, it's about 12% dilution a year when you account for funding rounds and employee equity. That's a lot of slices of the pie that aren't yours. Three expensive mistakes that founders can make and one interesting method I'm seeing that reduces dilution: 1. Taking venture capital in the first place ?? You're raising VC to be a huge company. Most companies are not huge, don't need to be, and can own a niche profitably. There are countless examples of companies that bootstrap or use debt and create a massive opportunity for a team that owns 100% of that outcome. 2. Overloading on cofounders ???????? The chances that one of your cofounders leaves is incredibly high within the first couple of years. Two cofounders is awesome. Three is great if there are complementary skills. Four is usually too many. Someone will want out, you can't necessarily blame them, and this can create dead equity on the cap table. 3. Handing out too many "equity snacks" to advisors, or senior hires ?? It's easy to dole out equity in the early days when you can't pay very much, but painful if it amounts to something down the line. Pick advisors that equate to sales or good hires, not great resumes with formerly fancy titles. To reduce dilution, I've seen founders actually skip a round of funding, get disciplined, and grow the business without extra capital. It's incredibly difficult, set aside for a small minority of startups. Usually, it's a later-stage decision. ? Even more unusual, I'm now seeing founders preferring to raise smaller seed rounds with less dilution in the beginning. They want less money to experiment if it means they'll dilute 10% instead of the typical 20%, and try to be scrappy earlier in the business.
