State of emergency and night curfew have been extended in Haiti. In a decisive move, the Haitian interim government extended the state of emergency to May 3rd while the night curfew was extended until April 10th. This is part of a broader effort to stabilize the nation, regain institutionalized control, and pave the way for the Presidential Council for the Transition. #JusticeForHaiti #HaitiStrong #HaitianAmericans #Haiti #Haiticrisis #FreeHaiti #HaitiSolidarity #PrayForHaiti #news #politics

It is always exciting to note new strides in post-conflict reconstruction within the continent. Hopefully, this process will be inclusive of the youth, women, children, people living with disabilities and other vulnerable and significantly marginalised people. ??Here is to peace and a successful implementation. #Yorja4transitionaljustice #youth4TJ #Transitionaljusticeforpeace

The Ethiopian Council of Ministers has unanimously approved the draft Transitional Justice Policy. The policy, effective immediately upon approval, aims to address a wide range of victims of human rights violations, conflicts, and abuses in the country. Previous attempts lacked a lasting solution, but this new policy is described as an inclusive humanitarian strategy based on mercy, justice, and transparent policies. I am thrilled about the opportunities this brings for healing and reconciliation in Ethiopia. ??? #TransitionalJustice #Ethiopia #HumanRights #Healing #Reconciliation

Armed conflict is a source of livelihood for the world powers. Hence, I advise African countries and every rebel group and power-hungry politician in Africa to think twice before plunging Africa into war. War is not the way out of bad governance, but constructive engagement using the instrumentality of the law and not refusing to vote during the election is the sure way out. Beyond voting, we must also stay engaged, until we are sure that the right thing is done by the leaders we voted into power. #dotherightthing

#Transitional Justice in Ethiopia is a significant topic due to obvious reasons. However, despite the desire of all Ethiopians to see it succeed, it is not fully developed to incorporate the people of Ethiopia or to determine whether Ethiopia has the capacity to conduct and implement a fully successful Transitional Justice policy. Civil societies, along with @LegacyTigray, share their concern about achieving Transitional Justice and accountability for mass atrocity crimes in Ethiopia. It is clear that while mass and active atrocities are taking place in Ethiopia, it is not feasible to propose a Transitional Justice policy. This document highlights how actions by the federal government undermine its credibility in undertaking effective transitional justice and accountability in the country. Justice lacking Peace; Justice devoid of Accountability is not what the people deserve!

???????????????????? ?????????????????????? ???? ?????????? ?????? ?????????????????? ???????????????????????? ?????????????? ???? ?????? ???? Although there are signs of change, the US’ #TransitionalJustice approach is still too localised and fragmented, with political divisions preventing comprehensive national policy. In ISS Today, Tadesse Simie Metekia and Ikubaje John Gbodi argue that the US can draw insights from Africa and other regions. https://lnkd.in/d34xy92P

I want to highlight a crucial message shared by the UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency Commissioner during the latest Security Council briefing ????. The Commissioner reflected on the worsening global peace and security challenges and the urgent need for political solutions. Humanitarians are nearing breaking point as crises intensify. The number of individuals forced to flee their homes due to war, violence, and persecution has surged to 114 million... The reasons for this escalation are multifaceted, often tied to geopolitics. However, a significant immediate factor is the rampant non-compliance with international humanitarian law. Conflict parties have increasingly abandoned the basic rules of war. Civilians are being killed, sexual violence is used as a weapon, infrastructure (schools, hospitals, refugee camps, etc.) are destroyed, and humanitarian workers are targeted. Never before have so many journalists and humanitarian personnel been killed. This alarming trend highlights the increasing dangers faced by those who strive to bring truth and aid to conflict zones. Their safety is paramount, and their protection must be a priority. This grim reality is evident in regions such as the Democratic Republic of Congo ????, Soudan ????, Gaza Strip ????, Ukraine ????, Yemen ????, Myanmar ????, and beyond. Addressing these issues requires more than just talk. It demands actionable political solutions and a renewed commitment to respecting humanitarian laws. We must prioritize finding these solutions and work together to alleviate the suffering of millions. #UNHCR #SecurityCouncil #ForcedDisplacement #GlobalPeace #HumanRights #HumanitarianLaws #PoliticalSolutions #DRC #Sudan #Gaza #Myanmar #Ukraine #Yemen

In “liberated areas” in Sagaing region and Kayah state, for example, there are innovations in governance and new experiments in using federal principles at the local level. Local civil society and community organizations, from national to township and village level, are also playing a key role in mediation and coordination not only over distribution of humanitarian aid but also in local governance. These new practices and forms of local governance are varied and by no means all democratic in nature, yet they have created an opportunity for reenvisaging and redesigning local governance in the country, in a way that has largely been impossible since independence from Britain more than 70 years ago.?

Ethiopia faces a complex and divisive political landscape, with ongoing armed conflict and a lack of consensus on how to reform the country’s constitution. READ - https://lnkd.in/d9BnkT6e Some argue that Ethiopia's problems stem from a lack of democracy and a violation of human rights, leading to widespread unrest. Others contend that the ethnically-based federal system enshrined in the constitution itself is the source of the country's turmoil, creating a divide between ethnic groups and fostering secessionist sentiments. While the government has proposed constitutional amendments, the process is fraught with challenges, as political actors remain deeply divided and there is a lack of trust between the government and armed opposition groups. #ethiopia #ethiopian #africa
