Today, we celebrate the achievements, resilience, and potential of people with disabilities around the world ?? – and I couldn't let the day pass without sharing a bit of my story. From six Paralympic Games and a lifetime of medals (and maybe a few funny falls on the way ??) to founding Smile Through Sport, I've learned that disability isn’t a limitation – it’s a unique strength that can inspire, empower, and (let’s be honest) provide some good laughs along the way! ?? At SMILE Through Sport the team work hard every day to show the world what’s possible when people of all abilities are given the chance to thrive – through sports, connection, and a whole lot of smiles. ?? So, here’s to everyone breaking barriers, challenging perceptions, and proving that the only limits we face are the ones we choose to accept. Great to see FIFA launching collaboration with member associations on disability football and plans for the FIFA Disability Football Toolkit which will be launched next year. The toolkit aims are as follows: - provide an understanding of the basic principles of disability football and the various disciplines that can be implemented by Member Associations and other relevant stakeholders; - to support increased participation in disability football globally; and - to share knowledge, celebrate best practice in disability football initiatives and accelerate collective action. I am proud to be a disabled person. The Paralympic Games have embraced and celebrated the uniqueness and individuality of athletes who happen to be disabled. ACC Board Member and Paralympian Dan Buckingham says 3 December is a pivotal day in the year. It’s when the world celebrates International Day of Persons with Disabilities, and Dan believes the significance of the day should not be underestimated. “Year round, there’s work to be done and work being done,” he says. “But it’s good to have one day where we can really bring to the forefront the issues we still face – the challenges, the attitudes and the mindsets around disability – and the expectations about what someone with disability can achieve.” Having lived with a disability for 25 years, Dan says there’s been some massive changes in the way the disabled community is perceived. “I think disability has come a long way in a relatively short amount of time. We were pretty late to the human rights movement, hitting our straps in the 80s,” he says. “Now there’s been a shift from needing to bang the table for people to hear. I know many of us are watching the opening of the Olympic Games today. While we are amidst the Olympics, did you know that the Paralympic Games in Paris follow shortly after the Summer Olympics, starting Wed, Aug 28, 2024 – Sun, Sep 8, 2024?? ? I'm bringing this up because today marks the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) signed into law on July 26, 1990. This landmark legislation has been crucial in protecting the rights of individuals with disabilities, promoting accessibility, and ensuring equal opportunities for all. ? What's the Impact? The ADA has significantly improved the lives of many by advocating for inclusive workplaces and communities.
