Submit a manuscript of 16 to 30 pages of poetry plus bio, title page, and acknowledgments with a $20 entry fee by September 15, 2024. We do allow hybrid manuscripts in addition to traditional poetry manuscripts: prose poetry or formal verse. We do allow art to be included with the manuscript. Please follow page count guidelines. How Poetry Reflects America: A Journey Through Hope, Disillusionment, and Resilience ???? Recently, I dove into an analysis of how America is portrayed in poetry, and it was an eye-opening experience. Through the words of Amanda Gorman, Langston Hughes, and Martín Espada, I explored how poets capture the essence of this country—its promises, its struggles, and the ongoing fight to live up to its ideals. Here’s what stood out: ? Hope – Amanda Gorman, in “In This Place (An American Lyric),” shines a light on the power of unity and the hope that we can build a better future, despite the challenges we face. ?? Disillusionment – Langston Hughes’ “Let America Be America Again” hits hard with its critique of the gap between America’s ideals and reality, especially for marginalized communities. It’s a reminder that the American dream doesn’t look the same for everyone. ?? Resilience – Martín Espada’s “Alabanza” honors immigrant workers and their unbreakable spirit, reminding us that resilience is at the heart of the American story. These poems show that America’s story is complicated. There’s hope, but also frustration, and through it all, the resilience to keep moving forward.
