Summarizing Lucille in three words. Say the first one is just love, like she just exuded love and everything, and not just for people, but her love for art, her love for community, her love for bringing people together. I would say the second word would be passion because she was not afraid to tell you what she thought. But when she was all in, she was all in. Like she she turned love up a notch and turned it into passion. And that's why you always wanted her on your team. And then I would say the third word is just bold. She changed. She literally changed the environment. The room when she walked in, I absolutely loved doing events where she was at them because you would just, the whole atmosphere would change. Lucille was able to balance a lot of things in her life. She was always busy with family, with being an artist, with being a leader, and she was sort of brilliant at it. I, I do know she would tell you that she didn't sleep enough or that she, you know, always wanted to. Break but she just happened to always be working and I I think the thing was is that in a way it was sort of this perfect trifecta for her is that she was deeply in love with all three things and so she was always going to make it happen. Our grandma was the backbone to my family. My grandma always inspired us to do better. You know, my grandma came from nothing and she built herself from from nothing really. You know, she got to be known in the community. She loved everybody around her. She's very uplifting. She had time to build her own relationship with everybody. When she came and she started taking over, she was the first person ever that actually got it and said we're going there, this is what we're going to do, Don't be ashamed, We are good enough. We are enough and we're going to make everyone see that this is what's valuable about us. She took her St. smarts and she leveraged it to push our mission forward. And go listen, you have to look at us more than than that. We're just like the grassroots St. kids because that isn't a bad thing. That's actually a really good thing because we are the people that are authentically keeping that alive. And we are now going to enter into this other world and make you see the true value of what we have to offer you. She was proud of everybody that she worked with. She that was her pride and joy was chalk. You know, she put in a lot of hours with it, but she and I asked mom, are you tired saying ohh, like it? She looked forward to every day to come to chalk. That was even after retiring. This was her. Like this is what she thrived for. She loved to see people grow. She loved to see the artists grow. She loved. I would say chocolates like her baby. You know what I mean? From the beginning to the end of her life, that's her life was based around chalk. I had come in as a survivor of trauma. And when I met Lucille, we talked about the trauma part, but Lucille focus with me from what I felt her standpoint was to help me heal. And. When I wanted to give up or when I wanted to quit, Lucille would intervene. And it was just like she knew I wouldn't hear from her for a couple of weeks, but she would just call me out of the blue and she would say, what is your next project? I have something going. I would like to be working. I would like to work with you and have you be involved in the project. And she would say, this is what I want to see you paint a this is what I want to see you do. I think you can do this. And this will help you heal. And this would help you, you know, XLS well in your art career. I first became an artist. Actually, a member of Chalk, I had my very first sale that was coming up and she said, you know, I have somebody who's interested in your painting. But I need you to price it. And so I went to her and I said, this is my first time. I don't know how to price this. This is new to me. I don't know what it's worth. And she said, well, what's your time worth? What is your skill worth? What did you sacrifice to make it? How much time with your family did you sacrifice? You know, your kids, your time away from work. And then what did you, what did, what did this painting mean to you? That's all what you need to consider. So I went away acting like I understood what she just told me and I came back and I said OK but that didn't help me. How much should I price this as? And she said he thought, what do you think it's worth? And she's like, give me a random number, just spit it out. And I said 500 and she said OK, put 500 on it. So first Friday comes and I'm so excited to see my painting on the wall and I see a sold sticker next to it and I was like ohh my gosh. So I ran to Lucilles trying to find her through the whole gallery. I sold my painting and she said yeah I know he thought I bought it. And I said you did. And she said, yeah. And she said, and just so you know, I would have paid 800 for it, maybe even 1000. And she said, whatever you do as an artist, stop devaluing yourself and your work. And she said you are worth more than what you keep telling yourself. And I just that moment for me meant everything. I feel very proud that my mom is going to be the first Chalk Legacy honoree this is this is a big deal. For so long. Rock has. Been a pillar in the community. Has been a sanctuary for chicano artists who. Needed a place to call home. And. She understood that. In a very deep way. She loved this place. And the people. And frankly, the the spirit of the gallery. So, uh. So for me, the fact that she is, so for me, the fact that she's receiving this award. Makes me proud of the work that she's done in her life, but also. It also makes me excited to see where chalk will go in the future and. I think it's time that the community steps up and supports and. Honors not only my mom's legacy, but the legacy of chalk. And so I'm really excited to hear about that.
