2024, I am given to understand is the year in history during which the maximum number of nations (countries) go in for elections! Politics being the flavour of the season here’s a semi-serious take on the politics that plays out all round the year every year - Petty Office Politics! Professionals young or old, experienced or those wet around the ears shall all agree that they’ve witnessed what I call POP culture. The games we professionals play at times for that brownie point or simple sadistic pleasure. Here’s a simplified 3x3 view of Office Politics on 2 axes followed by a guide to tackling POP culture. Now, organisational politics chiefly depends on two parameters: 1) The number of power centers that exist. Primarily made up of veterans in the organisation with a jaded view of the world and/or those with newly vested powers trying to change/combat the old order 2) The level of interdepartmental collaboration that prevails; in other words, silos that exist within the organisation An understanding and mapping of the two can represent most organisations and more importantly leads us to how to be successful given the circumstances.
