The Ethicist on Privilege in Hiring Decisions The latest New York Times Ethicist column dives into whether personal circumstances should influence intern evaluations. The Ethicist argues that evaluations should consider an individual’s future performance while also weighing the benefits of a diverse team. Why It’s a Must-Read:? Having led Equitable Hiring Strategy at Indeed, I can tell you this column’s insights are right on point. “Objective” measures are often tinted by personal and societal biases, so factoring in an individual’s experience in achieving those objectives is crucial. What’s more, we know that organizations with diverse teams achieve more. It’s about setting the bar high but lowering the barriers to reach it. What’s your take on integrating diversity into hiring decisions? Can’t access the article? Shoot me a message—I’ll get it to you. https://lnkd.in/enzXm-mN

I watched a striking video today that sheds light on a familiar scenario: a proficient woman excels in her role, tackling challenges and exceeding expectations. Yet, her rewards are limited to symbolic thumbs-ups. This visualization starkly highlights a pervasive issue—praise does not equate to equitable pay or professional respect. The gender pay gap is a real and persistent problem, reflecting deep-seated inequalities in our workplaces. It’s not just about equal salaries; it's about genuinely valuing the contributions of all professionals, regardless of gender. It's high time we transformed our symbolic gestures into concrete actions. Ensuring equal pay and boosting female representation in leadership isn't just good ethics—it's good business. Join me in advocating for a workplace where respect and compensation are truly equal. Because everyone deserves to have their contributions fairly recognized and rewarded. #GenderPayGap #EqualPay #WomenInLeadership #Respect #InclusionMatters #BanUnpaidInternships

Embracing Equity and Inclusion: Building a Better Future Together Equity and inclusion are not just buzzwords; they are guiding principles essential for creating a fair and welcoming society. Equity involves recognizing and addressing disparities, ensuring everyone has access to the same opportunities and resources regardless of their background. Inclusion goes beyond mere representation, fostering environments where everyone feels valued, respected, and empowered to contribute. Embracing equity and inclusion requires deliberate actions at all levels of society. In education, it means providing equitable access to quality education for all students, regardless of their race, gender, socio-economic status, or abilities. It involves implementing inclusive teaching practices that celebrate diversity and accommodate diverse learning styles. In the workplace, equity and inclusion translate into fair hiring practices, equal pay for equal work, and creating a culture where employees from diverse backgrounds feel supported and included. It means recognizing and addressing systemic biases that may hinder the advancement of underrepresented groups. Beyond institutional settings, equity and inclusion are fundamental in shaping public policies and societal norms. It entails advocating for social justice, dismantling barriers to access, and amplifying the voices of marginalized communities. Ultimately, embracing equity and inclusion is not just a moral imperative but also a pragmatic approach for building stronger, more resilient communities. By embracing diversity and fostering inclusivity, we unlock the full potential of individuals and create a more just and prosperous society for all. #talentserve #internship

Firing employees is NEVER easy. I just had to let go two of my college interns. They were solid employees, but we ultimately decided their market was insufficient. There wasn't enough demand. Here are some tips if you're ever in this position: - No small talk at the beginning - Be direct and concise - Be prepared to answer questions (about pay, severance, next steps, etc.) It's never an easy thing to do, but a necessary part of business.

Why is it that talking about about changing culture in work so challenging? It’s often I see a lot of proactive marketing language about companies being more inclusive, providing a positive environment and creating a diverse landscape yet putting it into practice is a different thing altogether. I think (or at least i hope) it’s recognised now that a more positive environment which encourages diversity produces a healthier workspace and more energised workforce that will inevitably provide a higher standard of output. To me it feels like a must, so we can achieve everyones full potential but we’re still falling short. Currently it seems that you open the paper and read another story about an unhealthy and abusive work culture. When I left uni architect and the built environment was rife with unpaid or incredibly low pay internships lasting for a year and excessive overtime, I hope that this has changed but there’s still the discrimination and lads club mentality that we need to tackle. I think this week I might have a bleaker outlook on others but I feel a positive inclusive change is better for all. One little step that would be nice is people showing a little empathy and consideration especially in how they phrase things, it surely isn’t that hard. … #culture #workculture #workenvironment #teambuilding #thoughts
