November is #NationalTMJAwarenessMonth Did you know that in 2020, The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine published a consensus study report, "Temporomandibular Disorders: Priorities for Research and Care"? It called on the following stakeholders to engage: -Patient advocacy and patient-focused organizations -Health care professionals - across many areas of dentistry, health, medicine -Research funders and researchers -Health professional associations and organizations -Health care professional schools -Health care systems and private and public dental and medical insurers The report states: "Key to making a difference in improving care for individuals with a TMD will be: pioneering pathways that span medicine, dentistry, physical therapy, and other fields of health care to provide holistic, comprehensive approaches to care— interprofessional and interdisciplinary efforts are of critical importance, willingness of health care agencies, organizations, and professionals to commit the resources needed to address this long-neglected and often dismissed area of health care, and openness and commitment to using and strengthening the evidence base on TMD treatment and changing practice as needed." If you belong to one of the above-mentioned fields, I urge you to read and share the report with those in your network. And after you read it, respond to the call to action, because patients are suffering and desperately need change. https://lnkd.in/g-pTyhBD #tmd #tmj #tmdforum #nationalacademies #NASEM #patientadvocacy #ADA #healthcareprofessionals #hcp #reasearchfunding #research #medicalschool #dentalschool #midlevelproviders #medicalinsurers #dentalinsurers #NIH #NIDCR #physicaltherapists #nursepractitioners #primarycare #chronicoverlappingpain

As a healthcare researcher, I have witnessed the unfortunate phenomenon of "patient unmooring" - the development of PTSD or psychiatric conditions following a major illness or injury. It is crucial that we rethink patient journeys to account for this often overlooked aspect of the patient experience. Check out this article on post-treatment patient studies for more information. #HealthcareResearch #PatientExperience Link: https://lnkd.in/gzPYtZ-Q

Our cost analysis included only costs for CRANIUM and was not a comprehensive economic comparison of costs and consequences of alternative interventions or treatment as usual. We defined costs as the value of resources used to operate the intervention over a 12-month period from the perspective of a CMHC (14). Costs exclude patient investments of time, money, or other resources and laboratory processing and drugs, because Medicaid incurs these costs. We did not include research-related planning and development costs, instead assuming the analytic perspective of implementing a preexisting intervention (14). The CRANIUM intervention required approximately 45 hours of staff time per month (Table 1). This was equal to about an hour of staff time per patient per year. The total annual cost of CRANIUM was $40,254, or $74 per patient. Use of an automated registry would reduce staff time to 29 hours per month, or about 37 minutes per patient annually, and costs would be $31,680 per year, or $58 per patient. The largest share of costs was related to psychiatrist effort ($15,798; 39%), followed by administrative staff ($9,110; 23%), case manager ($7,767; 19%), nurse ($3,276; 8%), peer navigator ($2,559; 6%), and the primary care e-consultant ($1,744; 4%). https://lnkd.in/dJTumb5y

Finally! A more refined and diagnostically-useful description of brain functioning that has all too often been lumped into "Dementia". We need to share this information widely, among clinicians in all fields of health care as well as among caregivers. This is especially needed in training programs for behavioral health clinicians, who all too often just pass along information they have been given in courses that haven't been updated since the 1990's. There is such fear and stigma associated with this particular bundle of functional decline. Offering this distinction can make a difference in patient (client) outcomes, treatment approaches, and advance care planning.

?? I’m thrilled to announce that our paper, "Expert opinions on implementation of MDMA-assisted therapy in Europe," has just been published in the European Journal of Psychotraumatology! This research has been a labor of love, and I’m incredibly proud that our work has already made an impact. The Dutch State Committee has recognized the scientific evidence supporting the effectiveness and safety of MDMA-assisted therapy (MDMA-AT) for individuals with PTSD. This acknowledgment is a significant step forward, offering new hope to those who have been struggling with this condition. Key Highlights from our Research: ?? Expert Survey: We surveyed 68 leading researchers and clinicians, who strongly supported standardized training and equitable access to MDMA-AT across Europe. ?? Regulatory Challenges: Our experts highlighted the need for coordinated efforts to navigate the complex regulatory landscape, ensuring a smooth and uniform implementation across countries. ?? Training and Standardization: A call for mandatory specialized training for therapists, focusing on medical safety, ethical guidelines, and best practices. ?? Global Collaboration: The study emphasizes the importance of international cooperation and continuous research to integrate MDMA-AT into mental healthcare systems effectively. ?? Conclusion: To successfully integrate MDMA-assisted therapy into European mental healthcare, we need science-informed policies, active regulatory involvement, and strong global partnerships. Our findings underscore the need for ongoing research, open professional discourse, and collaboration. This publication is a significant milestone in our journey toward making MDMA-assisted therapy a reality for those who need it most. Thank you to everyone who contributed and supported this effort - Jerome Herpers PhD, Noah van Dongen, Josjan Zijlmans and Eric Vermetten. Studies cite that people live with OCD symptoms for an average of 17 years before receiving treatment. A piece of the puzzle that lends to this gap is misdiagnosis and underdiagnosis of OCD by mental health and medical professionals. ??In one study where case vignettes were presented to psychologists and primary care physicians, 40-50% of the case vignettes were not correctly identified as OCD, with taboo subtypes more commonly not detected as OCD. ??Findings from another study also suggested that when clients did seek care, 67% received talk therapy, which is not effective for OCD. ??Link to fact check: https://lnkd.in/eGRctExK ? At THRIVE. ? we want to close this gap by teaching therapists how to identify clients who have OCD and how to implement evidenced-based practices (ERP). We combine a mix of courses plus live virtual consultations to ensure therapists who work with us are providing high-quality care to their clients. We want to create a positive impact and help therapists thrive in a rewarding specialty.
