Happy Raccoon Day ! Just sharing this little guy along with his friend Maggie Magpie for #raccoonappreciationday. This is part of a story I'm currently revising to submit to publishers. Here are a few fun facts about raccoons -> Raccoons seem to wash their food before dining. This is because they have extra sensitive nerves on the fingers of their front paws. When they forage for food in water, they feel around with their paws to gather sensory information. Raccoons make their dens in the ground, hollow trees, or crevices in rocks. In more urban areas, they venture into homes and make dens in attics, chimneys, and crawl spaces underneath houses. Raccoons are known for their bandit-like dark face masks. One theory for why raccoons have masks is that the distinctive dark markings help deflect the sun’s glare and also may enhance night vision. They are intelligent animals. The raccoons were shown a cylinder filled with water containing a marshmallow that was too low to grasp. Then, the researchers demonstrated that if they dropped pebbles into the cylinder, the water level would rise so that the treat was within the raccoons' grasp. Two raccoons learned how to drop stones to get the treat. A third found an even easier way: she tipped over the tube to access the marshmallow more quickly. Raccoons have five toes on their front and back paws. Their forepaws are particularly dexterous and actually look and work like slender human hands. That’s why they seem to be able to get into pretty much anywhere and are easily able to lift the tops off garbage cans and open all sorts of containers. #internationalraccoonappreciationday #raccoon #raccoons #trashpanda #raccoonlove #raccoonlife #raccoonlover #wildlife #animals #babyraccoon #cute #rocketraccoon #raccoonbaby #raccoonillustration

Meet the West Coast rock lobsters. ?? With slow growth rates and a lifespan of about 50 years, West Coast rock lobsters have a fascinating lifecycle. Female rock lobsters carry their orange eggs on tiny hairs beneath their tails (this is when they are “in berry”). After 80 to 90 days, the eggs hatch and produce tiny, transparent, spider-like larvae called naupliosoma. Later, these larvae moult and become phyllosoma larvae with long, hairy legs. Saw this beauty while driving the roads of Alligator River a couple weeks back. Wish I was able to spend more time with him. Here’s some more Black Bear facts ?? ?? Bear Facts! ?? ————————— As omnivores, black bears have a varied diet, including meat, berries, fruit, insects, and leaves. Their 42 teeth reflect this diet, and by the time they’re 2 years old, they will have permanent teeth. ?? Most black bears average about 300-plus pounds, but the world record heaviest black bear was a whopping 880 lb, found in Craven County in 1998! ???? Running from black bears is never a good idea as they are much, much faster, reaching speeds of 35 mph! ????♂? ?? Bear Safety Tips! ?? ————————— NEVER feed bears as this will associate humans with food, and when humans don’t have food, well... you can guess what might happen. ?? When in Bear Country, always carry bear spray. It’s a $50 investment that could save your life. Bear spray has been known to be more effective than any other method of deterrent, including firearms. ???? Keeping your dog on a leash when out hiking is crucial. I want my pets to have as much freedom as they can, of course, but by not having your dog on a leash, you forfeit control over them, which can result in them squaring up with a bear. ?? ————————— Black Bear Safety Mann’s Harbor, North Carolina 05/30/2024 . . . #blackbears #wildlifefacts #bearsafety #natureeducation #wildlifeconservation #bearsofinstagram #outdooradventures #wildlifephotography #bearcountry #bearspray #safewildlifeencounters #naturetips #omnivores #wildlifeencounters #hikingtips #wildlifesafety #nikond850 #nikon #natgeowild #barlowstudio #keepgettingoutthere
