Unlocking Opportunities: DMC Get Fitted - Where A Suit Open Doors When asking one of our recent alumni to sponsor a student for a suit, he said, “Good morning, Dr. Goode; I appreciate you thinking of me a lot! I remember when I got my first suit with you. I think it was 5 years ago, and I can’t count how many opportunities that got me on the Hill in DC with the law internship and eventually to the work I am doing now and everything. Let me know the best way to send my contribution. It would be a gift to me to be able to sponsor a startup of another brother’s career.” These words hit home with the essence of our mission at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). Many young men of color at higher education institutions know it’s important to get internships, go to career fairs, attend mock interview sessions, and get help with their resume’. However, we forget about what it feels like to put in all of this work and hesitate to show up because we don’t have the proper attire, either because we can’t afford it or because no one took the time to show us how to wear it. At VCU, We Support You; We Hear You, We See You…So Let’s Get Fitted. D M C at Virginia Commonwealth University recently collaborated with Jos. A. Banks for our “Get Fitted“ event, and the results were impactful. Over 66 young men were able to buy a suit at half price. Among these 66 young men, 48 received a FREE suit, including tailoring and tax. Yes, 48 of those young men did not have to spend a dime, thanks to our VCU alumni, VCU friends, faculty, and staff. This initiative is our dedication to challenge and support ( Stanford’s theory, 1962) our students at VCU. It’s about more than just providing attire; it’s about opening doors, building confidence, and empowering the next generation of leaders. #ChallegeAndSupport #VCU #DevelopingMenofColor #Success #CommunitySupport

Prompted by a post from Rob Illidge, I’ve been thinking about what we do, as businesses and professionals, to support schools in preparing the next generation of workers. I’ve asked a number of my connections for help with this and most have brushed me off or plain ignored me but others like James Willetts, Lewis Ellis and Fraser Chapman have gone out of their way to offer their time, help and guidance which has made a real and measurable difference to students futures. When these fantastic young people enter the world of work I hope they return to the companies that have supported them. At NetWeaver - Web Hosting, I’m proud of the support we’ve provided to local schools, both in terms of time to support events and sponsorship, and training in the form of apprenticeships. I can say with absolute certainty that some of our very best people came through this route. We all have opinions on the next generation but unless we’re doing all we can to support them, our opinion has no value at all. If we want the best people in our companies, we need to help them get there. So, what could you do? Could you support an event at your local school? Pay for some equipment? Offer a placement? Take on an apprentice? Offer an online course? If you’re anywhere near Bolton I can probably hook you up with a contact at our amazing UTC. We have a careers fair coming up. If you’re not, send a couple of emails - you might just be amazed at how much you get out of it. #education

Are you looking for meaningful ways to support youth development and mentorship? Here are some ideas of activities you can engage in with students: 1?? Arrange a virtual or in-person job shadow so students can gain firsthand exposure to the day-to-day responsibilities and realities of your career. 2?? Offer constructive feedback and guidance on student projects or assignments related to their career interests, helping them refine their skills and ideas. 3?? Host a webinar for students tailored to your specific industry. In addition to discussing skills within your career, share skills universal to any industry, such as time management, professional etiquette, and networking strategies. 4?? Conduct mock interviews with students, simulating real-world interview scenarios and providing valuable feedback on their performance, communication skills, and confidence. 5?? Facilitate an internship or apprenticeship opportunity on-site or virtually to give students the chance to gain hands-on experience and mentorship in their chosen field. 6?? Coordinate or participate in career fairs or expos. If you would like to host any of these experiences for students, comment down below so we can help you get started!

#LovelyProfessionalUniversity Igniting enthusiasm among students Enhancing academics and placements interest among students requires a multifaceted approach. Implementing engaging, practical curriculum and hands-on learning experiences can ignite enthusiasm for academics. Offering internships, industry projects, and mentoring programs can bridge the gap between theory and practice, making learning relevant to career goals. Additionally, organizing workshops, career fairs, and alumni talks can provide insights into various career paths. Encouraging a growth mindset, fostering a supportive learning environment, and offering personalized career counseling can motivate students to excel academically and prepare strategically for placements, ultimately leading to a well-rounded and future-ready student body.

Before community colleges can promote careers or win parents over, they need to ensure their programs are preparing students for the job market and offering them sufficient opportunities to succeed. This doesn’t just mean reviewing the curriculum and credit requirements to ensure they are up to professional standards—it also. means creating a throughline for students from the courses to employment These include: ? * Guided Pathways, an initiative designed by the American Association of Colleges and Universities with support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Ascendium Education Group designed to reduce confusion among students about what courses will contribute toward their educational goals, improving their course completion rate and qualitatively improving their employment opportunities. ? * On-the-Job training with local employers, including internships and apprenticeship opportunities. Employers benefit from having input into the program development so that it will match the training requirements they need and from having a more reliable recruitment pipeline. ?https://lnkd.in/gSSnSJV9 * Career Fairs to help students meet local employers. These can also be places for prospective students to learn more about potential careers, where they can ask questions about what the jobs are like, work/life balance, income expectations, and opportunities for growth. True Grit: The Commitment of Scholars Behind Bars (Part 1) What does a typical college student need for success? For most, it's things we often take for granted: Google – A world of information at your fingertips. Email – Direct access to faculty and classmates. Smartphone – Staying connected and accessing tools anytime, anywhere. Access to Faculty – Office hours and guidance outside of class. Career Fairs – Opportunities to network and find internships or jobs. Access to Transcripts – Whether from high school or previous colleges, easy access to your academic history is crucial. A Well-Resourced Library – Countless books, research materials, and digital access. Answers On Demand – The ability to ask questions and get answers almost instantly. These are things the average college student uses without a second thought. But for scholars behind bars, most of the time, these luxuries are not readily available. Yet, they successfully navigate their educational journey with minimal resources, sheer determination, and unwavering commitment. That is what I call True Grit. Stay tuned for more insights from my visit to Jessup Correctional Facility, where I witnessed firsthand the resilience and dedication of these scholars. Britany Gatewood, Ph.D. Anthony J. ?? CALLING ALL SCHOOLS, PARENTS AND STUDENTS THAT STUDY A LEVEL ECONOMICS ?? We are running the biggest careers fair for A level Economic students in the Midlands. The biggest issue I found as a student was attending career fairs and leaving with a pile of paper and not being any clearer on what path I wanted to take. So, Econominds is putting together a careers fair that is opportunity-only focused. Meaning, students can leave with: 1. Access to exclusive school leaver opportunities and actually signed up for the next steps 2. Chance to speak to A* A level students in the Econominds community 3. Hear from experts in the field to understand what new skills you need due to AI 4. A CHANCE OF WINNING A PRIZE WORTH OVER £10,000 "Sounds too good to be true, there must be a catch." Nope, just that you must come with a parent or guardian because we want to educate parents on the new job landscape that exists too, because it is different to theirs. This way, you can support your children in the best way possible. Link in the comments, look forward to seeing you there! #economic #economicsstudent #alevel #schools #career #apprenticeships #degreeapprenticeships
