World Relief's President and CEO Myal Greene co-authored this OpEd emphasizing a recent report from INTEGRAL ALLIANCE partners about neglected crises. In the early 2000s, the world saw the power of collective advocacy and action in the face of HIV, and 24 years later, the investments in PEPFAR and The Global Fund, commitments from public and private partners to make life-saving medications widely available, and quick, responsive action from many implementers and researchers alongside people affected turned the HIV crisis around for the better. Those improvements continue. Will our community now turn attention to: --ending cultural, social, and economic isolation? --addressing climate connections with all our programs? --support for locally-led action? --not tiring of crises that go on longer than a media cycle? https://lnkd.in/ejYqKJbW

MUST READ: 'The Global health community must call for an immediate ceasefire & unrestricted humanitarian aid in Gaza' Link: https://lnkd.in/eScFtHsd Via BMJ ''The scale of the devastation and humanitarian crisis currently happening in Gaza is undeniable. Tens of thousands of civilians have been killed, including at least 14?000 children. But we’re also witnessing an unprecedented, deliberate, and targeted destruction of Gaza’s healthcare service—and it’s time for more of us from the global health community to speak out. Global health is about recognising how global inequalities in power result in inequity in health. It involves grappling with the brutal consequences of power imbalances and colonisation. So, why hasn’t there been more concerted outrage from global health experts, from racism and decolonisation practitioners, from reproductive health organisations, women’s rights advocates, universities, professional associations, and academic bodies, regarding the annihilation of the Gazan health system?'' This #WorldHumanitarianDay, we pay tribute to and remember the countless humanitarian workers and civilians who have lost their lives, and those who continue to work and live in unfathomable situations. ?? 300 million people worldwide now require humanitarian aid. Given funding pressures, conflict, and a climate crisis, partnership is essential to addressing this need. Standing in solidarity with the aid sector and the communities we work with, IHP partners with companies that have committed to providing quality medical care to millions of patients worldwide, from oncology treatment to vaccines, antibiotics, shipping, and storage. Now is the time to think more innovatively about how to support those suffering the most and the aid sector as a whole. #ActforHumanity #WHD2024 United Nations

??Today the world recognizes humanitarian efforts worldwide and advocates for the survival, well-being and dignity of people affected by crises, and for the safety and security of aid workers. ??At World Diabetes Foundation we support our partners in crisis-affected regions, seeking to sustain access to care for diabetes and other NCDs. We started 2024 strong when we joined global stakeholders at the Global High-Level Technical Meeting on NCDs in Humanitarian Settings in Copenhagen to discuss and advance integration of NCDs into humanitarian response frameworks. Together with governments, the UN, humanitarian agencies, and civil society, we're building resilient health systems and inclusive relief programs. ?? Our commitment to advocating for access to diabetes care, prevention, and support remains unwavering. See our partners in the film below; where amidst a protracted crisis in Jordan, the emphasis on reinforcing primary healthcare is pivotal. Through education sessions at health centers, people living with diabetes and hypertension are empowered to embrace self-management and health promotion alongside their treatment. ??This video was produced by BBC StoryWorks for the World Diabetes Foundation.

The relationship between foreign aid and the development of aid-receiving countries has been a controversial debated motion among scholars of economics, politics, and development. Pro-aid experts believe that for low-income countries with skyrocketing rates of poverty and inequality, devastating education and health care systems together with different types of endemic diseases such as Malaria, HIV, and Ebola, aid from the advanced countries is the key to pushing them out from such deteriorated condition through creating sustainable economic growth. Whereas, anti-aid experts have been emphasizing that foreign aid is not only infective in low-income countries but also pumps laziness into the vines of institutions of aid-receiving countries, and in the long-term, it makes them develop an addictive behavior to Aid. I would like to share my review of one of the titles by Dr. Dambisa Moyo who authored " Dead Aid: Why Aid is Not Working and How There is a Better Way For Africa". The book was published earlier but is still relevant in many aspects throughout developing countries. #education #growth #economics #africa #sustainable #healthcare #development #Deadaid #foreignaid #povertyalleviation #investment #FDI

Delighted to share our recent publication on the evolution of gender-based violence (GBV) coordination in Lebanon's protracted humanitarian emergency, 2012–22. Many thanks to Jennifer Palmer, Mazeda Hossain, and Jinan Usta for their collaboration. GBV is a global health and human rights issue that can be exacerbated in emergencies.?Considered to be a complex and politically sensitive issue in many contexts, GBV is often inadequately addressed during emergencies. Our findings in Lebanon illustrate the transformative potential of the humanitarian response on addressing GBV in the country, facilitated by effective GBV coordination. Such protracted crises present opportunities to expand GBV services, enhance coordination, and advance localisation. However, challenges persist in achieving sustainable and institutionalised GBV coordination and services, including the volatile, restrictive policy context which hindered government ownership, dependence on international funding and multiple compounded emergencies in Lebanon. Globally, we underline the importance of investing in dedicated GBV coordinators and allocating multi-year, flexible GBV funding alongside interagency strategies on GBV risk mitigation and prevention in emergencies.

On Friday we began telling you about a number of new studies from the ReBUILD team (liminal health systems in Myanmar/Thailand - https://lnkd.in/escMWfca) Today's looks at the role of the diaspora in supporting health system resilience in fragile and shock-prone settings. Health systems in fragile and conflict-affected states are compromised by brain drains of populations and medical talent, lack of infrastructure investment, and overreliance on external aid, amongst many other factors. However, diaspora populations originating from those states may contribute significantly to rebuilding health system capacity and resilience through various engagement pathways, which we believe are under-explored in the published literature.?This study explores how human, financial and social capital from the diaspora can strengthen local health system functioning. There's more on the study and its methodology here. https://lnkd.in/enXDeBW4 Image:?An optometrist examines a man’s eyes in a MAPS health facility in Beqaa, Lebanon. MAPS (Multi-Aid Programs) is a humanitarian, community-based, non-profit organisation focused on refugees and vulnerable populations. Its four programs, one of which is healthcare, seek to empower displaced Syrians, with the majority of programs designed and implemented by Syrian refugees themselves. MAPS is supported through donations from the Syrian diaspora. As the conflict in Sudan escalates, civilians are caught in the crossfire, facing displacement, hunger, and the threat of deadly diseases. The UN has sounded the alarm on the dire situation, highlighting: Over 10,000 cholera and 5,000 measles cases amidst a healthcare collapse. The looming 'lean season' threatens catastrophic hunger, with 3.5 million children malnourished. The conflict has driven nearly 7.8 million people from their homes, relying on humanitarian assistance. The UN's plea for $2.7 billion in aid has only seen 3.5% funding, leaving millions at risk. Let's stand with Sudan in these trying times. Awareness and support can save lives. https://lnkd.in/ehtwg8ug #SudanCrisis #HumanRights #EmergencyAid
