Very exciting to hear from Hance Clarke that as more GMP products are being supplied by producers in Canada, clinicians and scientists will be able to move with clinical trials in the chronic pain space. So great to see a thorough discussion on the findings and recommendations put forth by the panel that lead the legislative review of the Cannabis Act on medical cannabis at a national forum like the National Congress of Pain Great points offered also by Rahim Dhalla on pharmacists perspective on the current landscape, and Mark Ware on the necessity to establish a standard THC unit. https://lnkd.in/eXzW_Jy6

We have issued 3 infringement notices totalling $56,340 to News Life Media Pty Ltd for alleged unlawful advertising of medicinal cannabis on their popular lifestyle website Body+Soul. It is alleged that an article published on Body+Soul promoted the use or supply of medicinal cannabis to treat serious diseases or conditions, such as anxiety and chronic pain, in contravention of the Therapeutic Goods Act 1989 (the Act). These references are considered restricted or prohibited representations and are not permitted in advertising for therapeutic goods unless prior approval or permission by the TGA. Nick Henderson, acting Deputy Secretary of the Department of Health and Aged Care said, “Advertising prescription-only medicines, such as medicinal cannabis, directly to consumers is prohibited as it may create inappropriate demand and lead to unnecessary or harmful prescribing. “Treatment options should only be determined by a health professional in consultation with their patient. The TGA reminds businesses that the Act applies to anyone publishing information about therapeutic goods whether they are media outlets or the suppliers of those goods.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/gz_5mjsJ

Access to Medical Cannabis Act has passed the House of Representatives with a vote of 177 in favor, 9 against, and 9 abstaining. This is after almost a decade of lobbying. Meanwhile, in the Senate, a similar bill is under deliberation. The Act defines medical cannabis to include various forms such as concentrates, topicals, edibles, and oils with specified THC and CBD levels, for use by patients diagnosed by accredited physicians with debilitating conditions. Despite its potential benefits, concerns remain about its affordability for most Filipinos. While skepticism exists regarding its efficacy, evidence suggests medical cannabis can effectively manage pain and anxiety, often reducing reliance on opioids. A recent survey highlighted by Cannabiz indicates that a significant number of Australian patients using medicinal cannabis have successfully reduced or completely ceased their use of opioids and benzodiazepines. These individuals reported experiencing substantial and often “life-changing” benefits from their cannabis-based treatments. ??https://lnkd.in/evFSr_S8 This finding aligns with other research suggesting that medicinal cannabis may serve as a viable alternative to certain prescription medications. For instance, a study published in the Harm Reduction Journal found that a majority of participants reported decreased use of opioids (76.7%), anxiety medications (71.8%), and migraine medications (66.7%) after initiating medical cannabis use. ??https://lnkd.in/eH8YpCPv Similarly, a study in BMJ Open reported that after six months of medicinal cannabis treatment, 55% of patients achieved an average reduction of 30% in their opioid dosage, with 26% discontinuing opioid use entirely. ??https://lnkd.in/emTPF57b These studies collectively suggest that medicinal cannabis may offer a promising alternative for patients aiming to reduce their reliance on opioids and benzodiazepines, potentially leading to improved quality of life and decreased risk of dependency associated with these medications.
Hmmm there must be something to this medicinal cannabis! We know it... but why do our laws not reflect this?? Come on politicians, ten years down the track it is time to stop with the stigma and discrimination. Even getting a politician to open UIC 2025 Australian Medicinal Cannabis Symposium is a challenge...instead I am getting someone who understand the value of medicinal cannabis and who demonstrates intelligence and recognition of the science as well as showing compassion for the suffering. Let's clear the air with some facts straight from our latest blog! ?????? 1?? It’s Not "Just Weed": Medical cannabis in the UK is legal, prescribed, and used for health, not highs. Unlike the illegal street version, it’s specially grown, quality-checked, and used in controlled doses. ???? 2?? Gateway Drug? Nope! Contrary to popular belief, patients often reduce their use of other meds after starting on prescribed cannabis treatments, not the other way around. Studies confirm this trend globally! ???? 3?? Not Smoked, but vaped: Here’s a hot take—medical cannabis isn’t smoked. It’s vaporised to avoid harmful toxins. Keeping it clean and controlled for health benefits only! ???? 4??
