Most emerging managers believe that references should be focused on an individual’s “best friends” who will speak highly of them.?They are WRONG. References should help LPs ascertain the emerging manager’s key skill-based competencies: 1. Can the manager find great companies? (ie, sourcing) 2. Is the manager exceptional at picking the right deals? (picking) 3. Tactically, does the manager have the ability to win allocation? (winning) These skills change over time and over market cycles.?Remember, DPI is a lagging indicator and just because someone has returned capital in their 2014 vintage, doesn’t mean that they will automatically deliver DPI in their 2024 vintage. It is the emerging manager’s job to make sure that his or her references make it easy for LPs to say yes. These references should not only handle and check the box on reputation ? but also address how that manager delivers alpha via a competitive advantage in sourcing, picking, and/or winning. Tomorrow's Embracing Emergence volume is going out to 896 Limited Partners and Emerging Managers! If you only read one volume of my newsletter, this should be the one! It's about the "magic" only few Emerging Manager possess. Only few Emerging Managers (1-5%) possess this magic. But more could if they spent more time reflecting, writing, formulating frameworks, and honing in on the alignment between their humanness and their strategy. For LPs, investing in Emerging Managers all comes down to this: identifying the magic in the people you invest in.
