In the midst of what has been a pretty horrible period, with the young people we work with and our staff team desperately worried about the implementation of the Rwanda policy, I am so proud to hear the amazing Young Roots and Helen Bamber Foundation teams talk about how our partnership has been so successful in supporting young people through the age disputes process so that they are treated as children and get the protection and support to which they are entitled. Our holistic way of working with young people - where they might come to our hubs to play sport or learn English or cook, whilst there can speak to our caseworker to support with homelessness or find a GP, can access the amazing therapy from Helen Bamber psychologists or advice from our legal partners - is key. As our brilliant Senior Caseworker said, down time with young people, over an extended period, whilst having lunch with young people between appointments or playing pool with them at our youth club, supports young people to feel comfortable being their authentic selves and to show their true age. And while some of the practices used by the Home Office to determine a young person’s age do not give an accurate picture “a person’s mates at youth club are a pretty good indication”. Basically, creating connection, community and relationships with young people means they are able to relax, a bit, and be themselves and allows us to get to know them properly. It’s not rocket science, as our new report They Made Me Feel Like Myself, shows. We want to see fewer age assessments. They seem to be routine at the moment. And this really matters. Getting a young person’s age wrong causes real harm to children - it could result in a child being forced to share a room with an adult stranger in asylum accommodation, instead of being cared for in foster care. If age assessments must happen, they should adopt some of the approaches and evidence that come from our holistic, ongoing and relationships-based approaches to working with young people - our evidence shows it works. https://lnkd.in/eg5VZw_B

The podcast for this week's Monday Breakfast show is now up! The show is hosted and produced by me in the studios of 3CR Community Radio in Naarm/Melbourne.Today I explored: - Homelessness Australia's data on child homelessness from its Child Homelessness Snapshot released last week. - Yoorrook Justice Commission's response to data from the Productivity Commission which revealed that the rate of Indigenous children in out-of-home care in 'Victoria' is almost double the national average. - NSW Labor's delay of hearing the vital amendments to the equality legislation which would enshrine protections for LGBTQIA+ people in that state. NSW is the only state in 'Australia' which hasn't passed such protections. - The 24/7 protest set up outside Immigration Minister Tony Burke's office last Tuesday and what life has been like for the victims of the failed fast track system — which has left an estimated 10,000 people in limbo for up to 12 years without protections. How Do We See Disabilities? It is not unusual to work with all people in need as an aid worker. Visiting households and asking about their needs is a regular job. But imagine reaching a shelter at the top of a hill, each step reminding you of the suffering of the person living there who lost a leg during conflicts in their own country, resulting in long-term mobility impairment and forcing him to flee as a refugee. While walking, somebody asks, ‘Why do they live so far away?’” Now, let’s ask some questions: Is distance the only problem for a person with disabilities? Does the impairment make their life more difficult? Does being a refugee add additional barriers? Or does being a refugee with disabilities create even more risks? Let’s dive into the reasons behind these questions. Can we approach this issue with critical thinking? Absolutely. By adapting and updating our knowledge and practices, we can better understand the challenges faced by refugees with disabilities. At UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, I’ve witnessed how our values, which are integral to our mandate, promote and respect diversity. A few weeks ago, I was nominated for a four-day training module focusing on disability #mainstreaming in #humanitarian operations at Cox’s Bazar. During a field visit as part of this session, I was struck by the incredible #resilience of people with disabilities. Their ability to overcome exclusion is genuinely admirable. I’ve seen how the constant challenge of navigating an inaccessible world can foster resilience. When I met Abdul at the #Rohingya #Refugee camp, his welcoming smile spoke volumes about the importance of empathy and inclusion in humanitarian operations. He said, “For me, being called a disabled refugee is not a burden; it is another hope, another new life, and a strength.” #humanitariansatwork #protection #disabilityinclusion

I recently had the humbling opportunity to visit the Ukende Refugee Settlement and distribute essential non-food items to some of the most vulnerable members of the community - nursing mothers and pregnant women living with disabilities. As we arrived at the settlement, I was struck by the resilience and strength of the people living with disabilities , having fled conflict and living in unimaginable hardship. Despite the challenges they face, there was a strong sense of community and support for one another. We went shelter to shelter , identifying nursing mothers, many of whom were also caring for other young children, as well as pregnant women facing mobility issues due to disabilities. To each of them, we provided basic supplies like soap, sanitary pads, baby diapers, baby food and powder - simple items that are easy to take for granted but make a world of difference especially to these vulnerable people. This experience was a powerful reminder that even amongst the most difficult circumstances, every person deserves to have their basic needs met and to be treated with dignity and inclusivity. No one should be left behind or forgotten, especially those facing compound vulnerabilities. I'm grateful to all our volunteers and everyone who made this distribution possible. But there is still so much more to be done to support refugee communities and ensure no one is left out due to disability or other challenges. I hope by shining a light on efforts like these, we can inspire more compassion and action. #RefugeeSupport #Disabilities #Inclusivity #HumanitarianAid #supportpeoplewithdisability #WeRiseByLiftingOthers #disabilityinclusion #disabilityrights

In today's interconnected world, millions of children are on the move, searching for stability and opportunity. According to the Global Report on Internal Displacement 2023, Africa hosted nearly 19 million internally displaced people by 2022 due to conflict and crisis, with children making up almost 60% of those displaced. ?? Why Are Children on the Move? **Migration often becomes a survival choice for families.**?In 2020, 35.5 million child migrants were reported worldwide, highlighting the severity of this crisis. In East Africa, conflict, economic inequality, and climate impacts push families to relocate, often without adequate social safety nets. In the Southern region, migration is frequently driven by unstable livelihoods and climate vulnerability. Children on the Move (COM), especially unaccompanied, face serious risks—such as but not limited to trafficking, forced labour and exploitation. Girls are particularly vulnerable to gender-specific dangers. Save the Children (SC) defines COM as an umbrella term that brings together ''children who have been trafficked, children who migrate, children displaced by conflict and crisis and children who live and work in the streets''. Protecting COM requires immediate support and systemic solutions that prioritise their rights. Yet, despite policy frameworks, regional structures still fall short in fully safeguarding migrant children, leaving gaps in essential services like healthcare, mental health and case management. Girls, in particular, need access to essentials like sanitary products to support their wellbeing. ?? Education offers displaced children hope and a foundation for future opportunities. Initiatives such as “Reimagining Education for Migrant Children” propose flexible schooling and online resources to support children in transit, fostering resilience and social inclusion. Access to education not only enhances academic skills but transforms schools into places of stability and belonging. ?? Lessons on Regional Progress Southern African countries are showing how regional coordination can support child migrants. Through shared data, joint case management, and community-based protection, civil society networks and Save the Children are improving cross-border protections for COM. However, as highlighted in ‘Bridging the Gaps: Strengthening Cross-Border Child Protection in Southern Africa’, increased resources are needed to ensure policy consistency and equitable implementation. ?? Effectively addressing COM in Africa requires a unified, multi-sector approach. Member states, regional organisations, and development partners must join forces, sharing data, resources, and strategies to build a cohesive response to child migration. Civil society partnerships can enhance cross-border coordination, enabling knowledge-sharing and collective action. Coordination should extend across healthcare, education, humanitarian aid, and local communities to ensure the needs of all young migrants are met.

Thinking out loud ?? Women are natural caregivers, and I’ve seen many women-led refugee organisations doing amazing work in their communities that is not written anywhere. However, they are often overlooked when it comes to funding, because they have little to no documentation of their impact in ways that fit traditional funding models as they think of it as simple being of services to their people and very little to do with "look, this is the number of people we've helped" It's time for funding to reflect the reality of the incredible work happening at the community level. #WomenLedChange #EquityInFunding #AmplifyLocalVoices #InclusiveFunding #CommunityDrivenChange #FundTheFrontlines #SupportWomenLeaders
