MUTATIO THE MARATONA CHANGES TO REMAIN ITSELF ? There are only two more months to go until the 37th?edition of the Maratona dles Dolomites - Enel, dedicated to "Mutatio", which will take place on Sunday, 7 July 2024. ?? ? ALTA BADIA (SOUTH TYROLEAN DOLOMITES/ITALY) - EVERYTHING CHANGES, AND EVERYTHING FLOWS? Humans change, often failing to learn the right lessons from the past; mountains around us change, often due to human actions; cyclists struggling on the passes change, and their metamorphosis is more than positive, just as the Maratona changes in an attempt to improve while remaining true to itself. "Mutatio" is the theme of the 37th?edition and is a principle dear to us because humans can exist only in relation to others, in a continuous process of transformation. Will the Maratona change? Certainly, it will change. Just as the thousands of cyclists pedaling on the Dolomite passes will change. Panta rei, everything flows. NUMBERS AND REQUESTS? Despite the passing years, and speaking of mutations, the allure of the Maratona seems never to change. This year, requests for participation were nearly four times higher than the available bibs. The total number of requests is 31.500, while the number of participants is set at 8.000. As always, 50% of the participants are Italian, and 50% are international, representing 86 nationalities, while 1.500 will be volunteers, and there will be 6 hours of live streaming on the national channel Rai2.? You get the city you decide to build for: induced demand is proven again. ???? Brussels bike traffic has gone from a counted 4.7 Million trips in 2020, to a projected (by me) 11.5 Million trips by end of 2023. That could give a 244% increase in 36 months. This is notable, as 70% of respondents to a survey in 2022 reported having experienced verbal agression from people driving cars... aka, Brussels was not already a bike -loving city. Brussels passed the 50'000 riders per day level for the first time in 23, with every month up on 2022 YoY. Local shops are seeing increased repairs demand, with the CyCLO chain having carried out 14 a day (16'000 so far this year) across its shops. What led to this huge growth? No one single factor, but a coordinated big-picture strategy. In '22, 50km of bike paths were laid out in Brussels, in 20 & 21 it was 38. So this swift level of modal change is definitely not just down to reallocated space from cars. More likeley and importantly, it was aided by the citywide 30kph speed limit recently introduced and the city centre low emmissions zone plan being upgraded year on year. (As a result, 20% of riders report feeling safer, with ~70% of them noticing the newly laid out infrastructure). Additionally, Belgium has a attractive bike to work leasing scheme; the economics of attaining a vehicular bike are phenomenally attractive. That purchasing incentive likeley contributed to the reduction in participation of frequent (daily, multiple days a week, and weekly) cyclists as a percentage of participants in the last 3 years - due to far more new participants using bikes as a transport mode occasionally.
