Breaking Barriers: Get Portrait Ready with these 4 Tips Today, I’m shifting gears from technical discussions to share insights gathered during my past six months of portrait photoshoots. My aim is to empower and educate you, whether you're preparing for your upcoming portrait session or taking on the role of the photographer. Preperation: From a suitcase packed with clothes to a minimalist approach, from an abundance of accessories to a preference for using professional hair and make-up artists, every choice contributes to the portrait process. And let’s not forget - It’s essential to consider your budget and the type of shoot, whether corporate, casual, or artistic. Despite the variations, a common thread runs through all these options. TIP ONE - Wear what you are comfortable in. Be it wardrobe, accessories hair or makeup. You’ll be amazed at how something familiar will add to the authenticity and character of the image. Don’t overthink it! Embrace Your Unique Self: I’ve encountered diverse concerns – from body image insecurities to camera shyness and I totally respect this. A big reason for writing this particular tip, was because of what a client told me during a photo session - her exact words - “I’ve accepted where I am and who I am at this moment and I’d like to capture my true self.” TIP TWO - Embrace and accept yourself in every moment. No amount of make up, retouching or lighting will help when you’re trying to capture an authentic image. It’s okay to just be you! Overcoming Camera Anxiety: It’s only natural to be nervous and to second guess yourself in terms of the final output. Something I’ve found that helps and leads me to my next tip... TIP THREE - Ask questions and be curious about the entire process. There is no harm in asking the photographer for a mock photoshoot session, or build a moodboard or even visit the studio! The more you know the more comfortable you’ll be during the shoot. Stereotyping in Portrait Photography: Let me be completely honest: seeking inspiration from images is essential. However, it's crucial to recognize the distinction between everyday people's images and those of professional models. Every aspect, from the pose to the styling to the final image, is deliberate and purposeful. From the subtle stance adjustments to nuanced facial expressions, every detail contributes to the overall impact. TIP FOUR - Take a few selfies or spend some time in front of the mirror and copy the poses from the images you like - see what you can achieve. Or even better - ask the people you spend a lot of time with - to tell you what they find you doing most. The magic happens when you stay true to yourself! 99% of my clients walk into my studio and immediately tell me that either they’re not photogenic, hate having their picture taken, wish me luck getting a great image of them, or any number of other negative statements about themselves. Yet, it’s rewarding to see how confident and happy they are when leave. How does this happen? Here are the five practices I use with all my clients to make sure they leave feeling happy and excited to receive their finished images. 1. I don’t put any pressure on my subjects. It takes most people between ten and twenty minutes to get the feel of what it’s like to be behind the camera. For some people, it takes longer. But it’s all done in a relaxed atmosphere with zero pressure. 2. I keep it light and fun. We’re going to get some great photos and we’re going to get some duds. As I like to say, that’s why we take more than one picture! The bottom line is we just go with the flow and enjoy the process! 3. It may not seem like it, but I’m always coaching you through different expressions and positions based on your requirements for your images. You may want something more serious, something lighter, more or less casual, etc. I coach each subject through the range of expressions and looks to create great images of each look they need. 4. As soon as we’re done with the photography, I guide each subject through the selection process. Nobody leaves with that task hanging over their head, trying to solicit opinions from friends, family, coworkers, or strangers. We’ve spent time creating each image for a specific purpose and we’ll work together to stay on task to select the images that will work as successful marketing tools targeted to specific audiences. 5. I work with a couple of fantastic hair and makeup artists for those who want to look their best in front of the camera. It’s all taken care of in-studio before the photography starts and we test your look in the camera to make sure everything is just right. You can even have the artist stay throughout your entire session if you’d like to change your looks. Here are my top tips ?? ?? use bright colours or at least stay consistent with your own style ?? have props to work with ?? pick a location whether outside or indoors that has versatility ?? pre plan your outfits and you must try them on before! no testing on the day. make sure you're comfortable with what you're wearing so you can feel happy in front of the camera ?? If you do wear makeup, wear enough that makes you feel nice but don't overdo it. Some translucent powder for that shiny forehead would be handy for all genders ?? cringe...i know... but practice in front of the mirror.
