Yesterday, Mark Olsheski from Sussex Strategy Group, Spencer Gill from Hydro One, David Donovan from Ontario Power Generation, and moderator Terry Young of Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) provided their insights on the future of Global Adjustment in Ontario. The main takeaways: The energy sector in Ontario will look very different in next decade. There will be an increased demand for electricity, driven by AI, data centres, and new economic opportunities like battery manufactures and EV manufacturers. We will require new supply on the grid to meet this demand, which will likely impact the price of energy. Flexibility will be a requirement – but also an opportunity for large consumers, including opportunities like the ICI program and even local programs. There are things large consumers can do, like installing onsite generation or batteries, and the best course is to take matters in their own hands and be proactive, rather than reactive to anticipated changes.

The UK's energy market faces inertia challenges as decarbonisation speeds up. Flexibility through battery storage and demand response is vital for decarbonisation. Overcoming inertia requires progressive funding mechanisms, smart metering infrastructure, and addressing opt-in resistance. Current uniform pricing fails to accurately reflect dynamic constraints. Enhanced locational pricing, carbon prices, and geo-technologically specific incentives are essential for a sustainable transition. The Integrated Grid of the Future The future grid will combine grid-based and off-grid solutions, factoring an integrated distribution strategy, alongside productive services enabled by electricity supply The vision for the integrated grid of the future requires adequate planning at all levels to achieve wide scale electrification; from generation, to identify cost effective generation technologies that will drive down the levelized cost of electricity, to transmission, to allow for adequate and effective power flows across the networks with minimal losses and disruptions, to distribution, to optimise least cost delivery modes for energy access, and finally to supply and end-use to promote sub-optimal resource utilisation without leaving anyone behind. The first level of integration requires a coordinated approach to on-grid and off-grid development; to promote inclusive energy supply across urban and rural areas. The second level of integration relates to electricity supply and end-uses; seeking to optimise the economic, climate and environmental impacts of access. This level also factors the integration between the power sector, environment, and other sectors of national economies. The third level of integration entails a system-wide integration at the regional level; with national and regional power sector institutions coordinating generation, transmission, and distribution planning.
