Our students recently continued their hands-on journey with the pond clean-up project, making significant progress while learning about the environment. Armed with tools and determination, they identified different tree families, gathered bags of branches, and removed large debris and invasive duckweed. Along the way, they discovered various species, witnessing the fascinating metamorphosis of creatures like dobson flies, tadpoles, and frogs. This real-world environmental project exemplifies how Elite Prep Academy’s curriculum encourages students to actively engage in learning that makes a difference. Our approach to education provides the opportunity for students to explore, discover, and contribute to their surroundings. Imagine the transformation when students embark on authentic, experiences alongside professional scientists. Picture this: an immigrant student, never before setting foot on a beach, timidly facing a horseshoe crab. Yet, with guidance and encouragement, they bravely dive into the task, analyzing the organism and contributing their findings to the team. The result? A newfound confidence based in the realization that they too can excel in the world of science. ? At the Blue Swallow Farm Foundation, we make these life-changing experiences possible. We equip teachers and students with the tools and knowledge to explore the natural world, not only enhancing learners' academic achievement but also nurturing their well-being and instilling a sense of environmental responsibility. ? Now, you have the opportunity to be part of this journey. Join us in our mission by supporting our annual online auction. Your contribution will enable educators to empower their students while they discover their potential as the scientists of tomorrow. Together, let’s cultivate a future where every student has the chance to thrive in the realm of science through outdoor instruction. ? #OutdoorLearning #EducationResearch #CurriculumDesign #TeacherResources #ResearchCenter #NatureEducation #ExperientialLearning #OutdoorClassroom #STEMeducation #HandsOnLearning #OutdoorEducation #LearningOutdoors #NatureBasedLearning #EducationalResources

Project-based learning is one of the best ways for students to understand a concept with great clarity. This strategy worked well with our grade 3 students at Ela Green School. While learning about the migration of the Arctic tern, they created paper models of the Arctic tern and illustrated its migration in a beautiful way. This activity-based learning deepened the students' understanding of the intricate details of bird migration, encouraging them to inquire further. A few students took the initiative to ask questions, which paved the way for deeper learning. Here are a few inquires from PYP 3A... Why are the birds flying in V-shape while migrating? How does a bird knows where to migrate? Why are the birds migrating in groups? What are the dangers and risks in bird migration? Where will the birds stop to rest and feed? How will the newly born baby birds migrate with their moms? How can the birds fly under the hot sun during the day time? What happens if it rains during the migration? #Elagreenschool #pypinquiry #ibpyp

Place-based and nature-based approaches compliment each other and offer strategies for individualizing education for all children, and this blog provides a nice overview of the two approaches. Professionals in the #ECSE field, like me, should challenge themselves to consider how to apply these strategies in an inclusive way. There are so many opportunities to explore!

WHY SHOULD YOU TEACH OUTSIDE? How does it help to be outside more often, when teaching in the primary years? ??? Develop the skills of observing and noticing, which are as integral to scientific experiment as they are to poetry. ?? Gain a familiarity and understanding of your local nature; understanding the bigger picture through the example of the small picture ?? We have ‘sit-still norms’ in a society that needs better physical health, for teachers and pupils alike. ?? Relationally healthy class dynamics come about when children get to engage with eachother in a wide range of different contexts. ??? Children speak differently - more candidly and authentically - in more informal settings. By framing the outdoor learning space as an alternative classroom, we can harness the power of its talk. ?? Knowledge sticks when it has experience to tie it to - much of the curriculum that we currently teach in abstraction can be introduced in reality too; animals, weather, seasonal change, land formation, biodiversity, local history, land use… #teachoutside #forestschool #forestlearning #outdooreducation #relationalschools

?? Exciting News! The Cahaba River Society's CLEAN education program is on the move! ?? We are now booking field trips for Fall 2024 and offering classroom presentations at no cost to you. Our program supports teachers' efforts and lesson plans with flexibility in coverage and emphasis, ensuring an enriching experience for all students. Our main goal is to help students become comfortable in nature, learn about the extraordinary biodiversity of the Cahaba River, and understand its importance. Through project-based activities, students learn to assess water quality and habitat health, leading to discussions about the challenges the river faces and ways to positively impact this vital drinking water source. We tailor our programs for various subjects, including biology, environmental science, earth science, STEM classes, and even the arts like creative writing, music, and graphic arts. Here are our four foundational activities: ?? Fishing: Students use seine nets to capture and observe fish, learning about their physiology, habitat needs, diet, behavior, and challenges before releasing them back into the river. ?? Survey of Macroinvertebrates: Students gather and identify insect larvae, mollusks, snails, crayfish, etc., learning about their fascinating life cycles and their role as indicators of water quality and habitat health. ?? Water Chemistry: Simple experiments with field chemistry kits align with STEM standards, offering a different method of presenting information to cater to varied learning skills. ??? Watershed Geography: Teams work with different maps and questions to learn about the watershed, culminating in a comprehensive understanding of the student's place and impact on our drinking water source. During 2020-21, CRS created 20 new and fascinating river videos for online learning, available in our resource library on our website. We also have procedures for safe outdoor education and stewardship activities. Check out our resource library: Cahaba River Society Resource Library We look forward to getting your students out on the river and building a deeper connection with nature and science. Let's make this school year unforgettable! ???? #CahabaRiverSociety #EnvironmentalEducation #STEM #FieldTrips #NatureLovers #CleanWater #OutdoorLearning #Biodiversity #Conservation #Stewardship
