The worst thing happened. As the emcee introduced me to an energized crowd of 550 people at TEDxUniversityofJohannesburg I took a deep gulp of water, hoping the anxious dry mouth wouldn’t kick in. But as soon as my heels hit the red dot, I felt my throat tighten. I looked out at all the encouraging faces and thought of the countless hours I’d spent practicing that opening line. Each sentence felt like a challenge, and I prayed the audience couldn’t hear the struggle behind my words. Halfway through, the one thing I had feared—a complete blank—became reality. Jet-lagged and weary the night before, I’d worried, “What if I lose my place?” And here it was. I told the audience I’d lost my train of thought and glanced down at the red dot. Coach Hylton Gudmanz words echoed in my mind: “If you fumble, pause, and restart the sentence.” After a few painfully long seconds, the words came rushing back to me. I finished with every bit of emotion and joy that had been building up inside for months. My message was finally out in the world, a feeling akin to giving birth—professionally and, in a way, personally. Standing alongside wildly impressive South African experts, authors, actors, and doctors as the first international speaker was an honor. I hope I made a positive impact on at least one person in the audience and offered an example of an American woman stepping into a new path. The biggest impact, though, was on myself. The voice of self-judgment was quieter than ever. And though I’d worried when the emcee introduced me as “Dr. Murphy,” fellow speaker Katlego Thulare reassured me by saying, “Well, you give off doctorate vibes!” This comment made me laugh and let it go. This day was truly unforgettable, and I am still in awe of the incredible production by the University of Johannesburg. Thank you, Reneka Panday for making me feel so welcome.
