$75 million can go a long way to train and employ the chronically unemployed and prevent or end their homelessness. It can work wonders in research to improve the cognitive health of seniors, and be put to work to end the trafficking of children. I believe that it is time for charitable foundations to review their priorities and to consider reprioritizing their funding to have greater positive impact on improving the human condition. I am not suggesting that "The Arts" are not important and worthy of support. They are! But consider this... Those who are jobless, poverty stricken, homeless, suffering with Alzheimer's or another life-altering condition are not likely to enjoy museums and The Arts. I believe that this is the time to reprioritize! I do understand that many foundations are structured with guidelines and funding priorities set in place by their founding donor(s). Even then, many of these foundations can find and encourage programming that improves access to those who are dependent on vital human services. How about funding for entry fees and bus transportation for families and individuals wanting to visit and benefit from museums and other nonprofit arts and historical institutions? #charitablefoundations #nonprofits #humanservices #foundationgrants #grants

New HistPhil post: How do you tell stories about the history of philanthropy through?objects? What can we learn about the history of philanthropy from questions like: What was an object made from? Where did the materials come from? Who were the makers? Who used the object and how? What was the sensory experience of using the object? What sort of emotional experience did the user have with the object? Why did the object survive? Amanda Moniz introduces a recent special issue of journal The Public Historian, which explores material culture as a methodology for the history of philanthropy. https://lnkd.in/dZUwSEVa https://lnkd.in/dZUwSEVa

Celtic art Celtic art, associated with the ancient peoples known as Celts, spans a vast timeline from the European Iron Age to the modern era. This art form is renowned for its intricate designs, including spirals, knotwork, and zoomorphic motifs, which often depict animals like stags, boars, and horses12. The earliest Celtic art, from the Hallstatt culture (circa 800-450 BCE), features geometric patterns and stylized figures. This evolved into the more elaborate La Tène style (circa 450 BCE-1st century CE), characterized by flowing, vegetal designs and complex interlacing patterns1. These designs were not only decorative but also held symbolic meanings, often related to nature and spirituality. Celtic art is most famously represented in metalwork, such as the Tara Brooch and the Ardagh Chalice, which showcase the Celts’ exceptional craftsmanship in gold, silver, and bronze2. Additionally, the illuminated manuscripts of the Early Medieval period, like the Book of Kells, highlight the intricate interlace patterns and vibrant colors that define Insular art1. Despite the Roman conquest and subsequent cultural shifts, Celtic art experienced a revival in the 19th century, influencing the Art Nouveau movement and continuing to inspire contemporary artists and designers2. Its enduring appeal lies in its intricate beauty and deep connection to Celtic heritage and mythology. 1: Wikipedia 2: Worldhistory.org. #Celticart#celticheritage#romanhistory#celtichistory#tarabrooch#bookofkells#mythology#romanmythology#celticmythology#thecelts#

About 12 years ago, I started teaching philosophy beyond just the traditional classroom, through community projects, philanthropic efforts, and unusual events centered around ethics and aesthetics. Through the years, I've witnessed the transformative power of philosophy in action and hundreds of students have passed through the philosophy club I created, leaving their mark on our community and also internationally. Some students have stayed as active members, even after graduation, and graduate school. Well, during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic, two of my students initiated a challenge: if we could get 100 items for one of our many charity projects, with all the restrictions we faced, something that seemed impossible at the time, the club president would have to get an owl tattoo. Owls represent philosophy, wisdom, and the ability to see through dark times. An owl has also been the logo of our philosophy club for over a decade. Surpassing all expectations, we ended up with over 2,500 items by working together, prompting a humorous twist: everyone involved in the project would have to get the owl tatoo. I was sure it would just be a joke that would dissolve with time, but to my surprise, the day finally came, and we are now an official philosophy gang with our owl tattoos. As an educator, this experience is a profound reminder of the enduring impact we have on our students' minds, and, like in this case, sometimes bodies. #philosophy #filosofía #education #pedagogy #solidarity #groupwork
