Be Proactive - always be someone who looks for opportunities to add value. Take initiative to offer support on a project or identifying a need the team hasn't addressed yet. 2. Ask for Forgiveness Not Permission - Especially for those who may worry about being "too much": own your space as an intern. Trust yourself to make decisions and show that you know your worth. 3. Document and Showcase Your Work - Keep track of your accomplishments and actively share them with your manager and other team members. Get your work recognized, and ensure that others can vouch for your contributions when it's time to discuss full-time offers. ?? When we started our internship program from scratch, we asked a lot of questions. Our team had several learning opportunities.? One thing we needed to sort through was the role we wanted the intern to fill. Some questions we asked included: > What department would benefit most from an intern?? > What will daily tasks look like?? > Do we have larger/longer-term projects they can also contribute to? We also had some operational questions, including:? > Do we have someone on the team who has time to mentor an intern?? > What are our end goals for the company and the intern?? > What computer set-up and tools would they need to be successful?? Caitlin Baker, our Design Services Coordinator, was tasked with developing and mentoring our first intern Megan Burns. She created a program featuring important but relatively low-risk projects that would give the intern meaningful, hands-on industry experience.? It’s that time of year when businesses start thinking about summer help. Could you use an intern this summer? Here are several things you need to consider before bringing on your first intern.

Are you a summer intern wanting to convert your internship into a full-time offer? Here are 3 things NOT to do: 1. Don't just focus on working hard. Make sure to build relationships with others, be genuinely curious, and share your story. See point 3 for more about this. 2. Don't get drunk at team outings. If you're in a corporate environment, chances are there will be team socials and happy hours; it's totally okay to enjoy your drinks (if you're of age) but don't get sloppy. Remember, you're still in a work setting and your seniors are observing you. 3. Don’t just talk with people on your direct team. Talk to people on other teams and organizations within your company. This will provide you with a big-picture understanding of your function and team within the larger company. AND, this allows other people to speak up and provide you with positive feedback come the end of the summer internship. When I got my full-time offer from my Big 4 internship in my junior year - I received the feedback that I was the only intern who had done this - and it was a big plus on my feedback.
