Today, in Pittsburgh, US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Regan and Pennsylvania Governor Shapiro announced $4.3 billion in Climate Pollution Reduction Grants as part of the Biden-Harris Administration's Investing in America agenda. These grants will fund projects in 30 states and one Tribe, targeting greenhouse gas reduction across six key sectors. The selected projects are projected to cut emissions by up to 971 million metric tons of CO2 equivalent by 2050 - equivalent to the annual energy use of 5 million homes for over 25 years. Fehily Timoney and Company are delighted to hear that Kilkenny County Council has adopted its Local Authority Climate Action Plan for the years 2024 to 2029. The Plan defines many ambitious climate actions in the areas of governance and leadership, built environment and transport, natural environment and green infrastructure, and sustainability and resource management. The plan focuses on actions Kilkenny County Council can take to reduce its own organisational greenhouse gas emissions, achieve climate adaptation in the county, and spur community level greenhouse gas emission reductions. FT supported Kilkenny County Council through the provision of SEA and AA services. This allowed for the integration of environmental protection consideration into the Plan. It also facilitated stakeholder and public engagement on environmental matters relevant to plan. One of the most powerful incentives to scale private sector investment in addressing the rapidly growing costs of flooding, fires, food insecurity, disease vectors, increasing rates and unavailable property insurance, health and other impacts of extreme weather is to reduce the risk of those investments. This EPA investment is expected to yield a 7-1 return in invested private dollars. “The EPA is awarding money to eight nonprofits, which have committed to leverage nearly $7 in private capital for every $1 of federal investment. The nonprofits have also pledged to ensure that at least 70 percent of the funds will benefit disadvantaged communities, and that the financed projects will reduce up to 40 million metric tons of carbon dioxide a year — equivalent to the annual emissions of nearly 9 million gasoline-powered cars.” Buying down the perceived risk of private investors is especially valuable in scaling high-risk, high-reward projects and portfolios.

Today, July 22, as part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s Investing in America agenda, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced selected recipients of over $4.3 billion in Climate Pollution Reduction Grants to implement community-driven solutions that tackle the climate crisis, reduce air pollution, advance environmental justice, and accelerate America’s clean energy transition. The 25 selected applications will fund projects in 30 states, including one Tribe, that target reducing greenhouse gas pollution from six sectors: transportation, electric power, commercial and residential buildings, industry, agriculture/ natural and working lands, and waste and materials management. The Environmental Protection Agency has made a historic $20 billion investment in clean-energy projects across the country. This program will create clean-energy jobs, reduce energy consumption and help achieve Biden's environmental justice goals. Under the Justice40 initiative, at least 40% of the benefits of federal climate spending will go to disadvantaged communities that have historically suffered from pollution. Now, people who have been overlooked, underestimated and underserved will have a seat at the table. Today, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced $20 billion to create a national clean financing network for climate and clean energy projects as part of the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund. This program directs long-overdue funding to projects that will reduce pollution, lower energy costs, and create good-quality jobs, especially in marginalized and low-income communities. Over $14 billion of this funding will be invested in low-income and disadvantaged communities, including over $4 billion for rural and energy communities as well as over $1 billion for Tribal communities. Local governments have a key role to play to realize the success of this program. Cities and counties must work with their community and cross-sector partners to help build the pipeline of projects and implement them successfully, delivering real benefits on the ground to the communities that need them most. Today, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that a record 45 states, plus Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico, and dozens of metropolitan statistical areas have now developed climate action plans supported by EPA Climate Pollution Reduction Grants!
