Remembering heroes from childhood stories can provide a sense of continuity in uncertain times and remind us that we have the power to face challenges, overcome obstacles, and achieve our goals. Roald Dahl’s “Matilda” came to mind in the months leading up to and in the aftermath of the recent U.S. presidential election. With Matilda's story, the controversial author provides comfort in tumultuous times: "So Matilda’s strong young mind continued to grow, nurtured by the voices of all those authors who had sent their books out into the world like ships on the sea. These books gave Matilda a hopeful and comforting message: You are not alone.” The story's young protagonist has extraordinary intelligence and determination. Despite adversity and neglect, she finds inner strength (and temporary superpowers) to change her circumstances and positively impact those around her. Published in 1988, the story's themes of empowerment, resilience, and finding inner strength to make a positive difference still remind us that we are not alone and have the power to change the world in 2024 and beyond. https://lnkd.in/ghB_Bc8Y #matilda #resilience #2024election

Digital media is the point of the spear of modern public history practice. It is the single most effective way to engage audiences, of all the ages that matter, and spark enthusiastic connections. But it doesn’t mix with marketing. Just take a look at Mount Vernon’s latest Instagram post. What does it say about the growing realization that sites like this not only avoid combating historical disinformation but actually are collaborators in it? Digital media is where fidelity to the past meets accountability in the present. It’s at the heart of modern public history practice. But this is misses that mark by a harmful mile.
