Appalachian School of Law’s National Latina/o Law Student Association President, Adrianna Avena-Johnson, is helping us kick off Latino & Hispanic heritage month with this note: In 1968, President Johnson created a week long celebration to celebrate Latino and Hispanic heritage. Under President Regan’s administration, this celebration evolved to last a month long. This month long celebration allows for our country to acknowledge and properly recognize the contributions made by Hispanic and Latino Americans. The terms “Latino” and “Hispanic” are used to describe Americans with Latin American and Caribbean ancestry. This term gives room for acknowledgement to other heritages. The term “Hispanic” refers to ties to Spain or the Spanish language. Regardless of the different terms, this is a month to acknowledge and celebrate those individuals. Latinos and Hispanics contribute to many aspects of our lives. We have contributed to: civil rights; space exploration; broadway and music; art and design; sports; food; medicine; and the legal system. Without these influences and contributions, the vibrancy that we all enjoy may not be as bright as we like. #HispanicHeritageMonth2024 #hispanicheritagemonth #latinohispanicheritagemonth #latinohispanicheritage #ASLStudentLife #lawstudentlife #asllaw #lawschool #asl #AppalachianSchoolofLaw #appalachianschooloflaw

'member what I was saying about getting jazzed about storytelling in legal marketing? Check this Q&A out, featuring the fabulous Angelica M. Mercado! There was SO much more to our chat than what we ended up including that I think Diana Maldonado might want to consider interviewing the next generation of badass Latinas for her next book. :) And just so you know, DEI advocate that I may be, I'm not a huge fan of awareness months. Sure, they might have been useful in the 1900s and maybe they are rooted in good intentions, but they seem to, now, allow white people (in particular) to sail clear past the point - much like Columbus, but I digress. As a content creator with a particularly finnicky client base, I am, however, going to use awareness months as a framework to get those authentic, genuine, real, and other synonyms stories into the public eye. Because attorneys are really interesting. And knowing how their early days influenced their initial career choice, which in turn created this very unique perspective on day-to-day and larger issues, can mark the beginning of beautiful friendships that ultimately result in protectively aligned business relationships. All because of a story. What's yours? #LawyerLife #LegalMarketingLife

?? Honoring Juneteenth: A Reflection for Future Legal Professionals ?? As we commemorate Juneteenth, we recognize and reflect on its profound significance to pre-law students and law students alike. Juneteenth symbolizes the long-awaited emancipation of enslaved individuals in the United States, marking a pivotal moment in our nation's history and the ongoing journey toward justice and equality. For aspiring legal professionals, Juneteenth serves as a poignant reminder of the systemic injustices that have shaped our legal landscape, inspiring a commitment to advocate for equality, equity, and fairness within our legal systems. It emboldens us to delve into the complexities of race, rights, and social justice, fostering a deeper understanding of the role of law in addressing historical inequities and shaping a more just society. Today, we honor the resilience, strength, and contributions of Black Americans, while also acknowledging the work that lies ahead in dismantling barriers to equity and justice. As future lawyers, advocates, and policymakers, let’s all stand together in our dedication to upholding the principles of freedom, equality, and justice for all. May this Juneteenth be a time of recognition, restoration, celebration, and renewed commitment to advancing justice within the legal profession and beyond. #LEAPfellows #LEAPAlums #LawSchoolPrep #LawSchoolJourney #FutureLawyer #LegalEducation #PreLaw #LSATPrep #LegalCareer #LawStudentCommunity #LawSchoolBound #FutureLawyers

There are certain figures that are central to the story of New York’s legal history. One of the most important is John Jay, a figure we continue to revisit. In 2022, we held an event entitled "The Enduring Legacy of John Jay." As part of that conversation, Walter Stahr, Esq. presented on Jay's life story, based on his book John Jay: Founding Father. In his comments, Stahr described a lesser-known fact about Jay: his central role in shaping New York's first constitution. What better way to focus on our FIRST state constitution as we explore #NewYorkConstitutionDay than to explore Jay's role in its drafting? In 1777, amidst the turbulence of the American Revolution, John Jay played a pivotal role in shaping the future of New York by spearheading the drafting of its first state constitution. Tasked with the monumental responsibility, Jay, alongside his fellow delegates, meticulously crafted a document that laid the groundwork for New York's first democratic government. Reflecting the revolutionary spirit of the time, the constitution emphasized principles of liberty, democracy, and the separation of powers. Jay's vision extended beyond mere governance; he aimed to establish a framework that would endure through the ages. The constitution outlined the structure of state government, enshrining the principles of representation and the protection of individual rights. Central to Jay's philosophy was the idea that government should serve the people, not the other way around. His efforts resulted in a document that set a precedent for democratic governance, not only in New York but also across the burgeoning nation. Beyond its immediate impact, the first New York State Constitution laid the foundation for future constitutional development, shaping the course of American democracy. Its principles would echo in subsequent documents, including the United States Constitution.
