Three major recent events in the adoption of Tesla's NACS connector as a charging standard: 1. #RivianR2 to have the charge port on the driver's side: While Rivian has been trying to grow its #RivianAdventureNetwork for fast charging, it has also confirmed the move to NACS for its upcoming vehicles starting with the R2. The Rivian R2 is the make-or-break vehicle for the company, giving it the money needed to continue operations as well as reach profitability. Previously, Rivians had the charge port on the right side, which made them incompatible with Tesla Superchargers (or you'd need to occupy 2 parking spots). This is a welcome change and shows the importance of adopting NACS. 2. #LucidGravity to have two charging ports... not!: At a fan event in California, a Lucid Gravity prototype was on display. Eagle-eyed visitors spotted something very interesting —?the SUV had two charge port doors (both on the driver's side, one in the front, the other in the rear). This led to the apparent confirmation of the upcoming Gravity to be equipped with an NACS connector. Lucid Motors announced last year that new vehicles in 2025 will have the NACS connector, but the ambiguity of the wording and lack of first-party information meant that nobody knew if the Gravity would stick to CCS at launch or be natively NACS. But, later company Nick Twoek (head of communications) clarified that the production vehicles will have a single port, bringing us back to square one on the charging connector conundrum. Two connectors would not have been a wise idea anyway, especially for a company whose entire spiel is efficiency and engineering. 3. ChargePoint's new #Omni Port addresses fragmentation in a simple way While NACS is a future standard, there are a ton of existing vehicles operating over other connectors, which makes establishing a third-party network complicated. ChargePoint addresses that with its new product called the Omni port. It's basically a modular all-in-one station that can dispense the CCS1/J1772 or NACS connector based on the vehicle. This is not only a win for consumers but also for infrastructure developers. Not having to be confined within one ecosystem helps them plan better. Additionally, it's just more efficient and will lead to higher utilization levels. As things stand today, every major legacy and new electric car OEM operating in North America has confirmed the adoption of the NACS (SAE J3400) standard. Apart from consolidation, this gives manufacturers access to Tesla's incredible Supercharging network, which remains second to none.

Only a few years ago, Elon Musk had laughed off on BYD. Fast forward to August 2024, BYD hit an annualised run rate of 43 lakh car sales, surpassing Tesla. It increased that to 52 lakh cars, and then to 61 lakh in Sep and Oct ’24 respectively. I hold the utmost respect for Musk, but he was wrong. .. Most importantly, what BYD has achieved is really inspiring for another reason. It’s slashing the prices, making cars affordable, the environment greener, and gaining market share, all while increasing margins and profits. Meanwhile, look anywhere in the industry, including Tesla, and you see the exact opposite playing out today. Thus, laughing off on BYD was a mistake by Musk. .. But, how did BYD do it? Answer: R&D. It redefined how cells, batteries, motors, magnets, gears, chassis etc are all built. It literally redesigned cars as a concept at the component level, reduced the number of parts which go into a car, and started to manufacture much of all the parts in-house. This helped decrease its reliance on an external supplier base, improved cost structure, and gave it the strongest control on supply chain as well as tech versus its competitors. Outcome? A motor with which a car can run on water like a boat. And a battery which you can put on fire, but still won’t blast. And a car design, which inherently uses ~20% lower amount of metal by weight, without any reduction in strength. .. BYD redefined what cars are about, and people worldwide are showing love for what it came out with. And what we at Emotorad are doing here is an attempt on similar lines. .. When we had launched, our biggest competitors had written us off. Why? Kunal, Aditya, Rajib and I were newbies, out to sell e-cycles at more than thrice the price at which India’s biggest cycle seller sold its e-cycles. But, our game was clear from day one- Completely redefine how e-cycles are built, and run. -> So, in the very early days itself we established a massive R&D team in Bangalore -> And quarter after quarter, our R&D team’s size has only been growing bigger, having surpassed 200 count a few months back -> And it’s only thanks to the world-class outcomes produced by these guys, that we could make the audacious attempt to build an e-cycle factory which is the biggest in Asia And yes, that’s not ex-China :) .. Fast forward: Today, we are bigger than everyone who wrote us off, combined. We are exporting made and designed and developed in India e-cycles to over 30 countries, including Japan and Europe. All just like BYD did - Using R&D as the core to establish global leadership, for the company, and for the country. .. Also, Jayant & I are building an insightful history-rich newsletter series called "BharatNama". Do check those out here: https://lnkd.in/dwwGd6ge And follow me (Sumedh) to never miss such updates from our journey of building EMotorad :)

???? 5 Things European Automakers Resisted—and Fell Behind the World ?? The European automotive industry is iconic—luxury, legacy, and precision. But even giants stumble when they resist change. Here are five areas where hesitation has left European automakers trailing global leaders: 1. ?? Software-Defined Vehicles The future of mobility is software-driven. Over-the-air (OTA) updates, enhanced connectivity, and digital services aren’t just buzzwords—they’re ?? game-changers. Yet, Europe has lagged in transitioning from hardware-centric designs to software-first vehicles. Innovators like Tesla and Rivian have shown how this leap creates cars that get better with time—and unlock new revenue streams. 2. ?? EV Battery Technology Europe is making strides in EV production, but the heart of EVs—the battery—remains a blind spot. While ???? China, ???? the U.S., and ???? South Korea dominate battery R&D and manufacturing, Europe relies heavily on imports. Early resistance to building robust battery infrastructure is a lesson learned the hard way. 3. ??? Nano Coatings Protecting electronics is vital in today’s vehicles, especially EVs and autonomous systems. Nano-coatings provide exceptional resistance to water, corrosion, and environmental damage, enhancing durability. ??? Yet, European automakers have been slow to adopt this innovation, missing a key opportunity to lead in advanced vehicle technology. 4. ???Autonomous Driving Systems The race toward self-driving cars is on, and some are sprinting while others hesitate. Companies in the U.S. and China are pushing boundaries with cutting-edge autonomous systems, while Europe’s caution—driven by regulation and liability concerns—has slowed progress. ?? Unfortunately, this delay comes at a cost in a fiercely competitive global market. 5. ? Lightweight Materials In EVs, every pound saved = more range. ?? Advanced lightweight materials like carbon-fiber composites and aluminum alloys are key to better performance. But while automakers in ???? the U.S. and ???? Japan embraced this shift years ago, Europe’s resistance has left its vehicles heavier—and less efficient. ?? The Takeaway: Innovation doesn’t wait. ?? To stay competitive, even the most established industries must adapt swiftly. European automakers have the talent and legacy to catch up—but only if they boldly embrace change. What’s your take? ?? Which of these challenges do you think is the biggest hurdle, and where could
