Key Highlights: ? Integrated Air and Missile Defence #IAMD, 18 Member States aim to fill urgent gaps with counter-UAS systems and build a robust architecture for high-intensity threats. ? Electronic Warfare, 14 Member States focus on shared procurement, data-sharing platforms, and next-generation jamming systems. ? Loitering Munitions, 17 Member States will collaborate on versatile strike systems with shared concepts and training. ? European Combat Vessel #ECV, 7 Member States are preparing joint procurement of modular combat vessels by 2040. Despite a 30% rise in defence spending since 2021, the CARD report underscores that national efforts alone are insufficient. Greater alignment under #PESCO, investment in strategic assets, and collaboration across the European Defence Technological and Industrial Base #EDTIB are essential for readiness and interoperability. The HQ-22 (also known as FK-3) is a medium- to long-range air defense system developed by China, capable of engaging various aerial threats including aircraft and missiles. It features semi-active radar homing and radio command guidance, with an operational range of up to 170 kilometers for the HQ-22 and 100 kilometers for the FK-3 variant. The system can simultaneously target six threats and is noted for its electronic countermeasures against jamming. Serbia is the first European nation to deploy this system, enhancing its air defense capabilities significantly.

Leonardo DRS Delivers 1,000th Infrared Sensor Key to US Army Helicopter Missile Warning System Leonardo DRS, Inc. announced today that it has provided the 1,000th advanced sensor package which is at the core of BAE Systems’ 2-Color Advanced Warning System (2CAWS), a next-generation missile warning and hostile fire detection system. The system is designed to protect U.S. Army pilots and crews from new and emerging missile threats. The advanced DRS 2-color infrared detector package is integrated into BAE Systems’ 2CAWS system for the U.S. U.S. Army’s Limited Interim Missile Warning System (LIMWS) Quick Reaction Capability program. The 2CAWS technology provides a foundation for the Army’s current and future threat detection needs by giving aircrews advanced 360-degree threat detection capabilities to enhance survivability.

Electronic Combat (EK) is a key capability to ensure the success of military operations. It focuses on efforts to control and exploit the electromagnetic spectrum for the benefit of friendly forces, while denying that advantage to adversaries. This is where 'luWES'(Airborne Effects in the Electromagnetic Spectrum) comes into play: it acts as an integrated strategy to counter enemy air defences. ‘luWES’ works with several subsystems: The stand-off jammer (SOJ) disrupts the enemy’s communications network. The escort jammer (ESJ) provides direct protection to fighter jets against enemy air defences. Stand-in jammers (SIJ) operate within anti access/area denial zones and force the enemy to react. Israel has been fortunate that its enemies have demonstrated a lack of creativity and synchronization in their attacks. In April, the previous airstrikes resembled a scattershot approach, with over 300 attacks involving cruise missiles, rockets, and slow-moving drones being launched at Israel. Despite this intense barrage, Israel, with the support of US and NATO forces, successfully intercepted and neutralized 99% of these threats. Looking forward, there’s a looming question: If Iran decides to attack, will they adopt a more phased and coordinated strategy? It’s possible that Iran could have its proxies target US ships, which are currently providing integrated support to Israel’s air defense system. This would force those ships to focus on their own defense, potentially weakening the overall air defense network. Complicating the situation further is the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier group, which is en route to the region. For now, its presence serves as a deterrent, but it won’t arrive for several weeks. This delay leaves a window of vulnerability. If Israel’s adversaries manage to coordinate their efforts and launch simultaneous attacks, the potential for significant damage increases dramatically. This scenario underscores the importance of maintaining vigilance and readiness to respond to a more sophisticated and unified threat. From my discussion with Jim Acosta on CNN.

The Sky News network reports: the Israeli attack consists of several stages - the first stage is the destruction of the Iranian air defense systems. Reports are increasing about additional attacks and explosions in the last few minutes in the Tehran area American officials: “We received an update from Israel that the attacks in Iran will continue for several hours”. Apparently a more significant wave of attacks has begun. In the first wave, we mainly focused on radars of air defense systems. Now it’s showtime!
