Scottish salmon and its Code of Good practices ???? Aquaculture is one of Scotland's most relevant industries. It not only provides internationally renowned food, but also has a vitally important contribution to the rural and national economy of that country. ? To maintain the prestige of its aquaculture products, in Scotland both the production of salmonids and other fish must adhere to a demanding Code of Good Practices. It was introduced in 2006 and Salmon Scotland, the British Trout Association and marine flatfish producers all subscribe to it. The code is independently audited to ensure its high standards support this successful industry. ? As reported by Salmon Scotland, the code mentions that the main objective of fish aquaculture is to produce high quality food for human consumption. In this way, the document seeks to encourage good practices, for example, in terms of food safety, complementing what is already established in the legislation. Likewise, it seeks to promote sustainable growth, managing and minimizing the environmental impact of aquaculture activities and guaranteeing a responsible food supply. ? ? ‘The fishmeal industry is a serious threat to food security and the future of fisheries in West Africa’ : A significant portion of fish used for fish oil in salmon feed is sourced from food-insecure regions such as West Africa, where food insecurity is at a ten-year high says open letter.? A coalition of international organizations and academics has called on the Norwegian government to ban the salmon farming industry from sourcing fish oil from West Africa. This appeal follows the publication of the "Blue Empire" report, which highlights the negative impact of this practice on regional food security and livelihoods. The open letter, signed by 39 organizations and experts, emphasizes the harm caused by overfishing driven by the global aquaculture industry's demand for fishmeal and fish oil. Signatories include African groups such as Collectif Taxawou Cayar, WADAF, RAMPAO, and CFFA, representing the small-scale fishing sector, and Norwegian and international NGOs including Naturvernforbundet (Friends of the Earth Norway), the Environmental Protection Association of Norway (NMF), and Oceana. https://lnkd.in/d745mfk5

?? Calling All Seafood Enthusiasts! ?? We invite you to read an important update from Stronger America Through Seafood (SATS) regarding the future of aquaculture in the United States. ?? Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/e-Vr9sQx ?? Key Highlights: ? SATS has sent a letter to the House Natural Resources Committee, signed by over 50 leaders from the seafood industry, environmental organizations, chefs, and academia. ? The letter advocates for expanding aquaculture in US federal waters to boost the production of sustainable, healthful, and affordable seafood. ? This initiative aims to enhance food security, support wild fisheries, and create quality jobs while maintaining environmental sustainability. ?? Why This Matters: With nearly 80% of seafood consumed in the US being imported, expanding domestic aquaculture is essential for securing our nation’s food supply and resilience. Offshore aquaculture holds the potential to improve food security, nutrition, coastal resilience, and job creation. ?? Legislation in Focus: The letter supports three key offshore aquaculture bills awaiting Committee action: ? HR 4013: The Advancing the Quality and Understanding of American Aquaculture (AQUAA) Act ? HR 5944: The Science-based Equitable Aquaculture Food (SEAfood) Act ? HR 1461: The Coastal Seaweed Farm Act #Aquaculture #SustainableSeafood #FoodSecurity #StrongerAmerica #EnvironmentalSustainability #SeafoodIndustry #USAquaculture #OffshoreFarming #Legislation #SupportAquaculture

This interview with Chris Ninnes is a "must-read," not just because it is an excellent piece of journalism, but particularly for quotes like this regarding farmed salmon: "The sector faces quite a well-organized group...not philosophically aligned with farmed salmon production....The general construct is that, if you get rid of salmon farming, then everything would be absolutely fine with wild salmon production. That, for me, is illogical." Good stuff. We need more leaders to step up and make this point so we can start to de-fang the likes of the Wild Fish Conservancy.
In the first installment of a two-part interview with?IntraFish, Chris Ninnes, CEO of the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) reveals the work being done by the ASC to create more robust certification for aquafeed and calls for a broader and “more honest” debate about the benefits and drawbacks of farmed salmon production.
