A day in the life of Retail. When I was in corporate and had a job interview, I always got the same question about my resume: “You managed Eddiebauer stores? What was that like?” People are fascinated if you have management experience at a storied and cherished brand. Working at Brooks Brothers as an Assistant Store Manager is no different. Actually, running a store is a lot like running a business. Because it IS a business that someone has entrusted to you to run. Retail is a great training/proving ground for building a knowledge and experience base in sales, project management, relationship building, hiring, human resources, merchandising, inventory control…the list is endless. What I love best about running a store, is the opportunity to leave my footprint on a business with my creativity and sales performance. So with Walmart opening up jobs for people without the college experience why don’t they open up a type of open interview for just associates to see their knowledge and if they ‘vibe’ with their team instead of bringing people in who know nothing about the position ????♀? There are so many DC workers that are trying to get to home office to better their career but they can’t even get an interview with home office at all. Instead they bring in people from other places and they try to change things before getting to know how everything works. Why not try and hire from down below where these workers actually know what it takes to run a DC?

There are few CFOs in recent—or not recent—business history who rival Costco’s Richard Galanti. I love a couple of pieces of GOLD NUGGETS he shared: ????Experiment, always. “We’re constantly trying new things, evolving the concept. The original Costco, for instance, had no fresh foods, very little in refrigerated foods, no pharmacy, food courts, gas stations, high-end jewelry or large products like mattresses and appliances.” ????A KPI worth watching. “I’ll miss this place. I tell college students thinking about their careers that when they get a job interview, they should try to show up 20 minutes early to visit the lunchroom. If most everyone has a smile on their face, it tells you they love what they do. I do. All these years, and I still love my job.” I have been an HR & Employee Benefits consultant for almost 20 years, and I've never thought of showing up early to an interview to visit the lunchroom. But this may be one of the best pieces of advice you'll ever get. It gives you a chance to see other employees and taste and feel the company's culture first-hand.
