Something I’ve learned about myself recently is that it takes a lot of guts to lay the groundwork for what could be a game-changing nonprofit for military families. I’ve found the courage to leap into this entrepreneurial journey, and I’m excited to share it with you. After navigating numerous challenges, I felt a strong desire to help others facing similar struggles. That's how The OCONUS Project was born. Our mission is to empower and support military families living overseas by providing vital resources, fostering community connections, and advocating for their unique needs. To kickstart this initiative, I need to hear from YOU—military spouses and service members who have lived or are currently living overseas. With the help of some fantastic supporters, we’ve crafted a survey to gather essential data that will enhance our mission and strengthen our advocacy efforts. ?? As a small organization, we rely heavily on the support from both private and public organizations, which enables us to provide vital services and conduct impactful events for our veterans. ?? Partnerships at Work: Funding: Every dollar donated by our partners goes directly towards enhancing our programs, from career workshops to community-building activities that aid in the successful reintegration of our veterans into civilian life. When it comes to making a difference in your community, information is the most valuable currency. That’s why the Marine Corps brought together nonprofit leaders on the island for a luncheon—to share insights, identify issues, and figure out how to use our collective resources to make the biggest impact. We can’t solve problems we don’t know about, and every nonprofit leader in the room shared valuable perspectives on where the military community needs more support. One issue that stood out was the sense of isolation some military families experience when they first move to Okinawa. I immediately knew this was something we could address through the North Island Okinawa Spouses Club (NIOSC) and other organizations like the USO. It’s not just about providing social events—it’s about making sure people know they aren’t alone and have access to resources that can make a real difference in their lives. As a community leader, having your ear to the ground and listening to these challenges is the first step. From there, it’s about taking action. I brought this concern back to the NIOSC board, and we’re already brainstorming ideas and sharing information and resources. This gathering of nonprofit leaders was not just a meeting of minds—it was a reminder of how vital it is to stay connected, share what we know, and work together to support the military community. The challenges are real, but with the right information and collaboration, we can create meaningful change. Many people walk through their day not believing they can change the world around them. They feel powerless to alter their circumstances or the broader societal landscape. But this is not the case at Veterans Collaborative or for our Veteran and military-connected communities. For us, service is a gateway to continuous growth, transformation, and value. It is a path to challenge ourselves, engage with and explore the world around us, access education or financial opportunities, and ultimately, leave the world a bit better than we found it. Sometimes, in the midst of our daily routines and challenges, we forget the immense power we hold. We forget that we are capable of great things, good things, and even hard things. Every day, I am reminded of this potential and the opportunity that people have to make this world around us better simply because we can. After years of seeing inequities in how resources and charitable opportunities lack reach into local communities, I knew we could do better. I knew we could be a voice of change and a catalyst to reimagine how philanthropy reaches our local communities at home. I embarked on the journey to establish Veterans Collaborative in 2022, knowing that our voices together were stronger, and we could make a difference. This Memorial Day, as we remember the brave men and women who have given their lives in service to our country, let’s also reflect on the role of businesses and entrepreneurs in supporting our communities and veterans. It’s a day to acknowledge not only the ultimate sacrifice made by our service members but also the opportunities our country offers for growth and prosperity because of those sacrifices. Here are meaningful ways businesses can engage this Memorial Day: Support Veteran-Owned Businesses - Make a conscious effort to partner with and purchase from businesses owned by veterans. Their entrepreneurial spirit continues to contribute immensely to our economy. Host Fundraising Events - Organize events or promotions where a portion of proceeds goes to veteran support organizations. It's a way to give back and say thank you. Volunteer Time and Resources - Collaborate with local veterans homes and service organizations to offer your services, or provide professional mentoring to veterans transitioning to civilian careers.
