Understanding objections to and arguments against cy pres awards is crucial for companies in class action settlements. My colleague Bill Boies provides a comprehensive analysis of leading cases, answering uncommon questions and rejecting broad objections. Last week, five HBCU students participated in Lumina Foundation’s HBCU Conference in New Orleans as paid content creators through Xceleader’s HBCU School of Hustle program. This program equips student entrepreneurs with practical experiences to build their skills and networks. At the conference, the students interviewed university presidents, faculty, and policy experts from HBCUs across the country, highlighting the critical role of Black colleges. We look forward to continuing to provide opportunities that empower HBCU students to share their stories and perspectives.

I am very excited to attend Black Footballers Partnership Trailblazer Awards tonight at the House of Commons, celebrating the contributions of Black footballers and coaches. Although football has not always been my passion or sport to watch, marrying into a family where football plays a central role - I have come to appreciate how sporting events has the power in uniting communities. As someone with a deep interest in issues of inequality, I am particularly excited to attend this event because it focuses on the pressing and urgent topic of discrimination within football. The research conducted by the Black Footballers Partnership (BFP) highlights a significant disparity: while Black footballers dedicate their careers to the pitch, their knowledge and skills are often overlooked when it comes to senior positions within the industry. This is not just a problem in football—this kind of #systemic #discrimination can be seen in many sectors. The BFP’s work, tracking these inequalities and advocating for change, is crucial. Tonight’s event is not only a celebration but also an opportunity for other organisations to take note and learn from these findings. It is encouraging to see firms like No5 Barristers' Chambers, Irwin Mitchell, MiWorld Services, and BK Plus supporting these important initiatives. Without this kind of backing, raising awareness on these issues would be so much more challenging. #BlackHistoryMonth #FootballEquality #BFP #Discrimination #TrailblazerAwards #InclusionMatters #systemic
It will be my pleasure to host the BFP Trailblazer awards- recognising the contribution of Black male and male footballers and coaches. The BFP do great work supporting players and providing data that tracks the inequality Black players face when trying to secure coaching roles. I had an exclusive interview with Patrick Vieira about being the only Black Premier League manager, last year- for itv news at Ten. Many people believe the treatment of ex-players reflects wider inequality in society. What are your thoughts?

As part of Lloyd’s Inclusive Futures programme, we are very proud to have hosted our inaugural Flint Lecture in the Lloyd’s Underwriting Room, which brought together some of the industry’s leading voices to discuss issues of race, inclusion, and heritage. Named after Lloyd’s first Black broker, David Flint, the Flint lecture series is a key part of our commitment to propel conversation on creating a more inclusive market and society. Attendees had the pleasure of being joined by Professor David Olusoga OBE - a reputable historian, author, and BAFTA-winning broadcaster behind the BBC’s Civilisations, Black and British: A Forgotten History and A House Through Time. The lecture delved into our speakers’ personal career journeys and reflections, as well as related research, before a post lecture session was held with David and Professor Alexandre White from Johns Hopkins University. You can watch some highlights from the inaugural lecture here: https://lnkd.in/e4z6tiqC Want to know more? As we reflect on a successful year of collaboration, we’re proud to look back on EBONY Pay Your Way, powered by Cricket Wireless—our impactful social-first docu-series that showcased the remarkable journeys of HBCU students balancing academics and entrepreneurship. The series highlighted the inspiring stories of students from Jackson State University, and Alcorn State University, each navigating their entrepreneurial passions alongside their studies. By pairing these students with a renowned business mentor, the series provided them with essential guidance and insight on building successful careers, both in business and in their communities. From event planning to hairstyling and geospatial engineering, the students exemplified the power of mentorship and how it can unlock new levels of potential. This year’s partnership with Cricket has been a testament to the incredible impact we can achieve by coming together to support the next generation of Black leaders and entrepreneurs. We're grateful for the opportunity to elevate these students' voices and are excited for what lies ahead as we continue this important work into the new year. BMEC 2024! Our Akoma Ntoso Fellowship invests $25,000 in Black men who are seeking to fulfill their next steps in their education careers. $12,000 in financial support, a mentor, an instructional coach, partnership with their school, and wrap around sustainment and retention strategies. One of those strategies is to expose and connect our men with a GLOBAL network of revolutionary Black Male Educators. Every year, we take our fellows and mentors on a fully expense paid trip to Philadelphia, PA for the Center for Black Educator Development Black Male Educator Conference. This conference was the catalyst for starting BLOC back in 2016, and we come back every year to get our cups re filled. Take a listen to Akoma Ntoso Cohort 3 and their BMEC 2024 experience. Thanks to BLOC, these men are ready to take on their work with a new vigor and perspective. HUGE thanks to the Hall Family Foundation for making this possible.
