We join the rest of the world in commemorating the World Health Day under the theme "My Health, My Right". Access to quality health services remains key to the provision of health rights in all Healthcare Facilities. One area that we are reflecting on, is the rise of infections acquired in #HealthcareFacilities which has costed Malawi millions of dollars every year, leading to thousands of preventable deaths. We continue to urge stakeholders in the #Water, #Sanitation and #Hygiene sector to join in the provision of quality health services and target the reduction of these infections by providing #cleanwater, #decentsanitation and #goodhygiene in our #HealthcareFacilities. #WorldHealthDay2024 #MyHealthMyRight

#Ethiopia approved a new health policy. That is #huge Depending on political leaning, some governments are pro universal healthcare and some against. This has implications because diseases and infections are not necessarily confined to the person or community that one lives in but spreads from one place to another. An untreated person with flu may travel to some other place and spread the infection which may result in others becoming sick which may ultimately lead to loss in man-hours in the industry and businesses of that place. To deal with problems like public health which has no boundaries, we need a coordinated global health policy which treats every infected person and prevents viruses like COVID and infections from spreading. Unfortunately, some politicians often motivated by short term gains, cannot see the benefit of such an argument and think that ??Spending on public health is a waste of money. ??There is a misconception that providing universal healthcare is costly. ??Primary healthcare is labor intensive and poor countries like Ethiopia have high coverage of basic healthcare among its population. These all are not true. We need to remember that global problems like public health or environmental damage have consequences in places far from their source. To tackle these menaces, governments of different states and nations need to rise above their political difference and usher in a global public health or environment policy agreed upon by all and for the common good. Ethiopia taking a lead to revise a 30years old Health Policy is a huge step forward...Kudos to all who put heart, hand and mind on this

The tragic experience of Mrs. Kechine during the birth of her baby sheds light on the critical implications of unreliable electricity in Ethiopian healthcare facilities. Her ordeal at the local health center, encountering complications during a nighttime delivery, forced her on a frantic journey to a hospital with a stable power supply. Regrettably, she lost her newborn, a heart-wrenching event that emphasizes the pressing necessity for dependable electricity in healthcare environments. Sadly, Mrs. Kechine's narrative is not an isolated incident. With a substantial 65% of health facilities in Ethiopia grappling with unpredictable power, and over 40% lacking any access to electricity, the country faces a maternal mortality rate of 401 deaths per 100,000 live births and an under-five mortality rate of 59 deaths per 1,000 live births. Mrs. Kechine's touching words encapsulate the anguish and fear many mothers endure due to insufficient power supply in healthcare settings. "I was terrified giving birth in the dark. I worried for myself and my baby. The nurses did their best, but my baby died during my hours-long journey to another hospital... I still think about my baby to this day." Mrs. Kechine's story underscores the critical need for sustainable solutions in healthcare electrification. April 7 – World Health Day Health is a very significant aspect of our lives. It determines how far we can go to achieve all life aspirations. Without health we cannot go about our daily activities let alone getting all other requirements for living. With the burning of fossil fuels that is simultaneously driving the climate crisis and taking away our right to breathe clean air, with indoor and outdoor air pollution claiming a life every 5 seconds, health coverage for all is the only way lives can be saved. As at 2021, 4.5 billion people - more than half of the world’s population were not fully covered.
