Yesterday, we had the honor of hosting community members, legislators, and board members for our first Legislative Luncheon in the Canal Room! While we often fill our event spaces with workshops and celebrations, it was exciting to gather together for a meaningful conversation about EdVenture’s impact across South Carolina. Our CEO, Andy, shared exciting updates, including new exhibits and expanded spaces coming in 2025. It was a pleasure to see familiar faces and meet new ones. Stay tuned for more as we continue to grow and inspire learning across the state! The Center for Justice Innovation is driven by a singular idea: local communities are critical to transforming justice. We believe that the only way to truly create safe and flourishing neighborhoods is with a full-spectrum approach that runs from communities to systems and back again. We call that approach Community Justice. We’ve seen firsthand how courts, community members, service providers, researchers, and everyone in between can do more for their local communities when they work together. Whether it’s in big cities or small towns, communities with a long history of justice reforms or ones that are just getting started, we can build Community Justice with these five key action steps. ?? https://lnkd.in/eFJFyHgX

I found these figures in the brief particularly eye-opening as a counterpoint to the economic argument frequently trotted out as justification for regressive climate policies. "In 2022, the value added from the outdoor recreation industry amounted to 2.2% of the nation’s GDP, which is more than motor vehicle manufacturing, oil/gas/coal, and air transportation combined. In Montana, the outdoor recreation industry is even more significant, accounting for 4.3% of Montana’s GDP, which is the third highest in the nation behind Hawaii and Vermont and more than the 4.1% contributed to Montana’s GDP by mining,?quarrying, and oil and gas extraction combined. In tandem with its impressive economic output, the outdoor recreation industry was also responsible for providing 4.5 million U.S. jobs in 2021. As of 2022, the outdoor economy provided over 29,000 jobs in Montana with a total of $1.38 billion in wages, compared to fewer than 10,500 jobs and $650 million in wages provided in Montana by mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction combined."
We are delighted to end 2024 in celebration with our clients of the Montana Supreme Court’s historic decision affirming that its citizens have a constitutional right to a clean and healthy environment. In Held v. State of Montana, the Court upheld a ruling by the First Judicial District Court of Montana in favor of a group of 16 youths (the “Youth Plaintiffs”) who sued the State in 2020. The Youth Plaintiffs successfully argued that Montana violated their right to a clean and healthy environment, and that certain State energy laws and policies that threatened that right were unconstitutional. Pacifica is proud to have represented a coalition of outdoor recreation industry businesses and nonprofits in filing an amicus brief in support of the plaintiffs. Pacifica’s senior litigation partner, Paul Lawrence, represented the coalition alongside attorneys Rebecca L. Davis and Brian B. Flynn of Lozeau Drury LLP.
