"A culturally affirming education for the 21st century does not flinch from difficult conversations about complex issues,” author and advocate OiYan Poon writes in a new piece for EdTrust. Poon details the importance of Asian American Studies in her own career and why ethnic studies are important for all students. In the post, one in a series at EdTrust on the importance of representation in books, the group Asian Americans Advancing Justice also offers book recommendations. ODI Lunch and Learn: “‘Bamboo ceilings,’ ‘in/visibility’ and ‘model minorities’: Navigating race for Asian American faculty and administrators” February 12, 2025 at 12:00pm?–?1:00pm?EST Schine Student Center, 304ABC This event brings together U.S.-raised Asian American faculty and administrators from across campus to discuss common experiences of marginalization in the academy. Like the “glass ceiling,” the bamboo ceiling refers to the barriers for promotion and leadership for Asian American workers. Whether it is because of an internalized disbelief formed through decades of lived experience, or the “implicit bias” and overt resistance to Asian Americans leadership, Asian Americans find it challenging to rise into and remain in positions of leadership. Stereotypes such as the “model minority” contribute to the “bamboo ceiling,” and the speakers for this presentation will challenge the perceived disposability of Asian Americans in higher education. CART captioning and lunch will be provided. Presenters: Diane Crawford, Executive Director of Institutional Culture, Martin J. Whitman School of Management; Wendy Moy, Assistant Professor of Music Education, College of Visual and Performing Arts; David Oh, Associate Professor of Communications, S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications; Mary Szto, Teaching Professor, College of Law https://lnkd.in/gXB9CqNW

The intolerant age. How creeping censorship captured Britain’s institutions. Hannah Barnes writes “Britain has a problem with free speech. The exploration of difficult ideas is being discouraged in the very places we would expect to see it flourish: our universities and the traditionally progressive spheres of the arts and publishing – areas that exist to expand knowledge and encourage debate, not shut it down. A creeping censorship has captured Britain’s liberal establishment. But the new government doesn’t seem to recognise there’s a problem.” Barnes says that explaining this shift towards intolerance is complex - but suggests that the burgeoning EDI industry has played a crucial role, with training often resulting in enforced groupthink. Does your organisation foster a culture in which people feel free to express different ideas on issues like gender, race and religion?

My latest publication in the European Educational Research Journal with Eli Smeplass: "Becoming Morally Equipped: A Study of Children’s Public Expressions." Our research analyses the letters and drawings submitted by children to Aftenposten Junior, highlighting their moral sensibility and engagement with societal issues. Our findings illustrate how young voices shape cultural and civic narratives, suggesting that children's moral development can be better understood in situational and cultural contexts, rather than purely psychological ones. It's been a little over a month since I graduated from Xavier University, and I've spent much of that time reflecting on my undergraduate experience. I had so many opportunities to engage with research based on things I was passionate about, and one project comes to mind that I would like to share. I took ENGL 319: Writing as Social Action during the fall 2023 semester, and it was one of the most enjoyable learning experiences I've had so far. The Jesuit tradition of eloquentia perfecta, or writing and speaking well for the greater good, made up the core aspects of this course, which was supplemented by engagement with rhetorical history and theory. The reflective journals, discussion posts, and essays I wrote led me to the final project that really cemented this course's influence on my life. "Diary of the Underrepresented" is a website that focuses on how black women and girls are often mis- or underrepresented in media representations of womanhood and girlhood. The site is made up of three essays focused on the narrative, rhetorical, and historical/research-based implications of this issue, and also includes a page of relevant resources. I put a whole semester's worth of hard work into this website, and was fueled by my passion for bringing this issue to light to as many people as possible. When you have a moment, take a look. If you want to discuss anything on the site with me, please don't hesitate to reach out! This is one of my favorite topics to discuss, and I hope you develop an interest as well. Happy reading! Further evidence of the indoctrination affecting our educational system, especially our literature. Teaching the classics will resolve this issue and will lead to higher educational excellence.? https://lnkd.in/gEXNrbui
