How can we best use increased funding in early education and child care to improve access, affordability, quality, and workforce strength? The COVID-19 pandemic forced a significant change in how we think about early childhood education, underscoring both its critical importance to working families and the chronic underinvestment in early education workers and centers. Today TBF and the Rennie Center are releasing 'Investment in Early Education and Child Care in MA,' a new report that looks at how early education and care is funded today, and explores the issues that continue to threaten the stability and potential of the sector. #qualitativeresearch #earlychildhoodeducation #policy #education #workforce How does a state transform its early childhood education system so it fairly compensates educators while remaining affordable to families? To find out, a research team from UC Berkeley's Center for the Study of Child Care Employment and I conducted a case study of New Mexico. I led in-depth interviews with educators and policy and education experts to assess the progress New Mexico has made, how it has achieved it, and the impact such changes are having on educators' compensation and overall well-being. According to data from Policy Matters Ohio, Ohio ranks: ?47th in K-12 funding equity ?? ?42nd in infant mortality ?? ?37th in child economic security ?? ?36th in preschool enrollment ?? There’s a clear need for policymakers to find ways to improve public education and childhood well-being. Providing Ohioans with strong educational foundations leads to better career prospects and economic growth, and prioritizing childhood well-being lays the groundwork for healthier, happier adults.

As always, timely and important work by @CSCCE. Their finding about the physical impacts of ECE professionals’ labor converges with what Kyong-Ah Kwon and her colleagues are reporting from their Happy Teacher Project. This is an issue the field must address (and NOT by pushing superficial “self-care”). Pervasive sexism and related low wages; classism; racism; expectations of child-centered self-sacrifice (see #1), physically and emotionally demanding work, and a troubled, hard-to-access mental/health care system (pervaded by the preceding) is a toxic recipe.
Kudos to researchers Wanzi Murivi, Anna Powell, Yeonjoon Kim, Abby Copeland Petig, and Lea Austin at the Center for the Study of Child Care Employment, UC Berkeley for their recent report on the Emotional and Physical Well-Being of Early Educators. Our efforts to build the early childhood education workforce must be mindful of this incredibly important issue https://lnkd.in/gBFEc-Et #TeachersMatter #SocialEmotionalWellbeing
