As Washington State grapples with budget constraints, a controversial decision has been made to close schools, sparking a heated debate among residents. The decision has been met with strong opposition, with many questioning the necessity of such a move, particularly given the importance of education in the community. Critics argue that the state's focus on unnecessary projects has led to this situation, and that the money could have been better spent on maintaining schools and supporting underpaid teachers. Some have suggested that the state should step up and provide more funding for public schools, rather than closing them. On the other hand, some argue that the decision to close schools is a necessary step to improve the education of children. They believe that the state has no choice but to take such drastic measures to ensure the future of the children. What are your thoughts on this issue? Do you believe that closing schools is the right move, or do you think there are other ways to address the budget constraints? Share your views in the comments below.

Compilation of latest statements from CA education organizations related to the California State Budget and their impacts to K-12: Association of California School Administrators 06/27/2024 "ACSA fought to reject the Prop. 98 manipulation proposal. Our success protects and retains nearly $5 billion in school funding this year alone. With that said, we continue to remind lawmakers that schools face serious fiscal challenges caused by declining enrollment; rising costs that schools have no control over — including employer funded pension expenses; expiring one-time funds; and attendance levels that still lag behind historical figures despite best efforts." https://lnkd.in/gdBv2GAR California School Boards Association 06/26/2024 "This likely final budget agreement is better than the education community endured during the last major fiscal crisis that began in 2008, and it includes some?improvements over both the Governor’s January Budget and May Revise proposals. Still, there are a few “rotten apples” in the deal that CSBA is analyzing closely and pushing back on to defend member interests, specifically a much narrower version of the original Proposition 98 maneuver, a school layoff freeze until March 2025 and a reliance on optimistic state revenue projections that may not come to pass." https://lnkd.in/g2dwmMZn CASBO 06/24/2024 "The?Budget Act of 2024?has been an unusual and dramatic development process, marked by intense debates. However, conversations between CASBO, the Legislature, and the administration have been invaluable. After each budget announcement, our Legislative Committee gathered to discuss and prioritize key issues. We deeply appreciate the time and trust that both the Legislature and the administration place in the voices from the field. Their ongoing engagement and responsiveness are crucial in addressing the needs and priorities of our members." https://lnkd.in/gK8aPR7X Coalition for Adequate School Housing (C.A.S.H.) 06/17/2024 "With less than two weeks left until the June 27th deadline to pass a bond bill for the November election, Legislative leaders and the Governor need to hear from you about the importance of passing AB 247 (Muratsuchi). They have yet to announce a deal, and important decisions about the content of the bond bill remain undetermined." https://lnkd.in/guxAFBAT EdSource "TK-12 funding will be flat and will continue Newsom’s major commitments to multiyear, multibillion-dollar programs, including community schools and before- and after-school expansion." https://lnkd.in/gvzSRd8v The general sense I see is that the K-12 world has an OK 2024/25, but many challenges remain on the horizon, and who knows where the economy will go. #education #k12education

As we continue to move farther and farther away from the COVID-19 Pandemic, conversations around emergency funding during that time are heating up. Many districts and leadership are wondering where those finances might go, as well as how do they continue those same initiatives without the same money. This recent article posted in EdWeek gives some insight into this topic. State funding for K-12 is actually forecasting to be at or above previous years, which is great news! Additionally, where the Federal funding in some cases might be going away, states nationwide are getting creative with how they enact funding to ensure those initiatives critical to students well-being continue. https://lnkd.in/gypP9cew

The state budget is done (and has been since July 11th, I'm just now getting around to posting about it)! Sharing a few things I am particularly excited about in the healthcare and higher education spaces: Healthcare - Regulatory oversight of Pharmacy Benefit Manager (PBM) for the first time ever in the commonwealth, thanks to HB 1993 (now Act 77 of 2024). - Ability for Pennie to be able to implement a state subsidy program for low-income Pennsylvanians. - $2.6 million increase in funding for maternal mortality prevention. - Creation of a $3 million dollar grant for menstrual products available for K-12 schools to ensure that students basic needs are met. Higher Education - Establish a State Board of Higher Education to coordinate policy, support, workforce initiatives, and carry out performance-based funding model for post-secondary institutions. - 6% increase in funding to PASSHE, which has allowed the PASSHE Board of Governors to keep tuition flat for a 7th consecutive year. - Over $120 million in increased funding for scholarships and grants to make college more affordable. - Doubles the investment in the student teacher stipend program, totaling $20 million to support students pursuing a career in education. Really appreciate the partnership and collaboration among legislators, stakeholders, staffers, and the many, many, others that it takes to get the budget to the Governor's desk!

?? Fixing Education in England: A Marathon, Not a Sprint ?? The Autumn Budget has everyone talking about education—but the big question is, how fast can real change happen? Challenges like underfunded schools, teacher shortages, and a “broken” SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) system are immense, and experts agree it will take time to see results. Here’s what we’re hearing: Some leaders want urgency ??: NEU’s Daniel Kebede believes new funding isn’t enough and says the government needs to "move faster" to tackle immediate issues in classrooms. Others see it as a cautious start ??: ASCL’s Julia Harnden says there are positives in the Budget but warns that investments in skills and infrastructure fall short of the system’s needs. Looking ahead to 2024 ??: Paul Whiteman from NAHT views this as a “start based on good intentions,” but he emphasizes that a real impact will require more ambitious investments in next year’s spending review. As the government takes these first steps, many hope the pace will pick up next year. It’s clear we need a sustained, multi-year commitment to build a resilient education system for our students, teachers, and communities. #EducationReform #SchoolFunding #SEND #FutureofEducation
