Cyber security is an important component of maritime security and the critical maritime infrastructure protection agenda. It means dealing with a growing, yet diffuse threat from criminals and states, including ransomware attacks or interference with navigation. In a new SafeSeas commentary, Tim Edmunds draws on the insights of our book Understanding Maritime Security (out now in print), and his recent visit to an event of the International Partnership for Maritime Cyber Security -- a key 6 nation minilateral format to advance maritime cyber security governance. As Tim argues in the piece such mini-lateral bodies play an increasingly important role "in bringing together like-minded states to work around shared problems. However, the globally distributed nature of the commercial maritime sector and the regulations it operates under means that the maritime cyber security challenge will ultimately have to be met in wider international standard setting bodies." USCG released its cybersecurity rule for U.S. flag vessels, ports, and offshore facilities. The Coast Guard states that the purpose of the final rule is to safeguard the maritime transport system (MTS) against current and emerging threats associated with cybersecurity.
