Today, I had the pleasure of meeting Rui Almeida, Board Chairman of EUFRAS, and Luís Mira da Silva, Manager of CONSULAI. ? ??EUFRAS is a dynamic network that unites advisory organizations across Europe to foster collaboration knowledge, while Consulai is Portugal’s largest consulting firm in the agricultural, food, forestry, sea, and rural development sectors. ? We had an insightful discussion about the importance of quality advisory services for advancing the (organic) agri-food sector towards sustainability. ? We also explored common initiatives to encourage young generations to engage in food and farming, whether as advisors, farmers, or food entrepreneurs.?? ? Looking forward to continuing our conversation in the coming months! ?? #EUOrganic #OrganicIsPartOfTheSolution

Intense debates have surrounded the current Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), highlighting divisions between those who define it as sustainable and those who argue it is not. However, this chapter contends that the central issue is not whether the CAP is sustainable or not, but rather understanding which definition of sustainability (if any) it aligns with. Recognizing that ‘sustainability exists within a continuum’, the chapter I co-authored with Giulia Corsini examines the livestock sector and food waste as key case studies to evaluate the sustainability of the CAP 2023–2027. The chapter, titled ‘The New Common Agricultural Policy Approach Towards the Livestock Sector and Food Waste: Lying at Which Point of the Sustainability Continuum?’, is included in the Routledge book ‘Ecological Sustainability and the Law: The European Green Deal and the New Frontiers of Sustainability’, edited by Edoardo Chiti and Andrea Giorgi. Link to the preprint of the chapter: https://lnkd.in/dw4Rrm9G Link to the book: https://lnkd.in/dpVwHiNt Among the authors of the book also: Enrico Mezzacapo, Antonio Manzoni, Matteo Greco, Emmalucia Virardi, Michele Di Vita, Michela Biscosi, Antonio Taurelli, Emanuele Fazio, Beatrice Baldini, Camilla Signoretta, Federica Montanaro, Stefano Porfido. #livestock #foodwaste #agriculture #CAP #EU #GreenDeal #sustainability #sustainabledevelopment #ecosystems

The #regenerative agriculture movement has grown in prominence over the last decade, with several drivers at play. Consumer interest is growing, some global food brands are adopting its language, investors are showing interest in specific measurable elements, and there’s potential for export markets to introduce regulations related to regenerative practices. But what exactly does regenerative agriculture mean? Whilst there is no clear consensus in Australia regarding the definition of ‘regenerative’, many of the common practices undertaken by farmers and growers align with its intended outcomes. AIA and SAI Platform Australia’s recent report into the state of play of regen ag in Australia has shown there are significant opportunities for agriculture, fisheries and forestry to collaborate in this space. We believe if we focus on the intended outcomes being sought by regen ag, there is an opportunity for stakeholders to work together and find the ‘middle road’. There’s also potential for further collaboration in the consideration of linkages within broader sustainability action arenas. To further explore the insights from our work, we will be hosting a roundtable discussion with stakeholders. Interested in participating or would like to know more? Presented as "dilemmas", the key findings are the questions that #Greenpeace (and other envi groups) have been raising for years and to a fairly large extent come to the same conclusions as Greenpeace has. ?Key dilemmas on future land use for agriculture, forestry and nature in the EU?, summarized here: 1.?Food security is NOT A PROBLEM in Europe. Its dependency ratio — the share of imported food and inputs by value — is around 10%, well below tech and transport, according to the report. The problem isn’t food availability, but affordability, which won’t be solved by more production. Rather, it requires tackling the overreliance on certain price -volatile inputs, namely animal feed, fertilizers and energy. We could produce more of these in Europe... 2. ...as long as we eat less meat. Unless livestock number fall dramatically, there is simply not enough land in Europe to grow all their feed. Of all the plants produced in Europe — for food, feed, textiles, wood, biofuels and bioplastics — 60% goes to raising farm animals. “A shift to more sustainable consumption patterns is needed,” the report summarizes, noting that EU citizens on average eat 40% more protein than is recommended. 3.?Diet is not just an individual choice?and should be helped with policies. 4.?We should consider deindustrialising animal husbandry. The report presents an “alternative vision for animal husbandry.” With much smaller herds raised in areas unsuitable for arable farming (like mountains) or close to zones with high waste streams (like processing, manufacturing or distribution facilities), to be fed on waste and “raw materials.

Rollins gets backing of national, state ag groups (via Agri-Pulse) A wide range of national and state farm and agribusiness groups, including the Renewable Fuels Association (RFA) is calling on the Senate to quickly confirm Brooke Rollins as the new agriculture secretary. “We need her leadership now at USDA to advocate for a new farm bill, stabilize an agricultural economy in decline, support the full food and agriculture and forestry value chain, and continue American agriculture’s long history of providing the most secure, affordable and nutritious food supply in the world. USDA has the power to help turn things around with strong leadership,” the groups say in a letter to the Senate Ag Committee. The groups say Rollins has “brought the perspectives of the American farmer and rancher to her work” throughout her career and that she “championed rural priorities across the federal government” while serving as acting director of the White House Domestic Policy Council during Donald Trump’s first administration.

Transform your supply chains today! Agriculture and forestry are major drivers of deforestation and human rights violations, yet they also provide livelihoods to millions of people globally. When managed responsibly, these sectors can provide resources, protect ecosystems, and support communities. Many companies have pledged to transform their supply chains, but progress has been slow. In 2019, the AFi created the Accountability Framework to bridge that gap. ?? What is the Accountability Framework? The Framework is a roadmap offering practical guidance on how to eliminate deforestation, conversion, and human rights abuses from commodity supply chains. Primarily, the Framework is designed for companies that produce or source agricultural and forestry commodities, such as beef, coffee, and soy. ?? Who can use it? In addition to companies, these organisations can make use of the Framework too: ?? Financial institutions ?? Multi-stakeholder initiatives and industry groups ?? Reporting and assessment initiatives ?? NGOs and civil society organisations ?? How was it created? Collaboration is at the heart of the AFi. The Accountability Framework was built through consultation with our diverse Coalition, as well as companies, civil society groups, industry groups, investors, regulators, and scientists. It reflects norms, expectations, and contexts across different sectors and geographies. The AFi envisions a future where commodity production doesn’t come at the expense of people and planet. By offering the Accountability Framework, we hope to support companies protect forests, natural ecosystems, and human rights! #AccountabilityFramework #Commodities #SupplyChains #SustainableBusiness #NaturePositive
