Cities that maintain good air quality could soon be rewarded. The 15th Finance Commission is planning to create a ?69,000 crore corpus to incentivise urban local bodies based on the levels of particulate matter PM10 and how they handle solid waste, Economic Times reports. While special funding is being sought for the Indo-Gangetic plain that suffers from extremely poor air quality, discussions are also underway to include cities with a million-plus population. The disadvantaged states of Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand, UP, Bihar, West Bengal and Rajasthan have been proposed to receive 60% of the air pollution grants. Will the move encourage cities and urban bodies to tackle pollution more seriously? Should there also be penalties for underperformance? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
