For me, this is my first exposure to PBL, and I must say, it’s quite different from the learning method I’m familiar with. What is PBL? PBL means Problem Based Learning and it is an educational approach that emphasizes real-world problem-solving. Instead of traditional lectures, we engage with complex issues that require critical thinking and creativity and it requires a deeper understanding of the material. As I'm just beginning this journey, I’m eager to see how PBL will shape my learning experience and prepare me for future challenges. Do facilitators of learning need to be experts in their academic area? This debate has followed me for years. Some think that great PBL teachers are those who learn along side their kids. Who do not have all of the answers and it’s not needed that they have a deep understand of their subject. Others think great PBL teachers are deeply entrenched in their subjects, nerding out with kids and sharing their deep passion for a subject area. Here’s my take. What do you think? Project-based learning (PBL) is an inquiry-based approach where pupils solve problems or answer complex questions over time. Rooted in Piaget’s constructivist theory, PBL encourages independent and group investigation. While implementing PBL requires careful planning and support, many teachers find it a valuable way to engage students and develop essential skills. It can also be a great group exercise during the summer months for students not sitting exams. DC teachers: Get a jump start on new OSSE SEL Standards with Inspired Teaching! Just a few weeks ago, OSSE approved new SEL standards that will be implemented beginning this fall. Teachers who take part in Center for Inspired Teaching's Teaching with Improvisation Fellowship this summer will become deeply familiar with these standards and develop engaging ways to make them part of daily instruction. In our recent email, we introduced the High-Quality Project Based Learning (PBL) Framework. Today, let’s take a closer look at the first key element: Intellectual Challenge and Accomplishment. Imagine a classroom where students are fully engaged, thinking critically, and striving for excellence. This isn’t just an ideal—it’s a vital component of high-quality PBL. No longer just "fun activities," PBL tasks should challenge students with complex problems and questions that require deep thinking. These projects extend over days, weeks, or even months, helping students build essential academic skills and knowledge. Some key questions to consider: Are students exploring challenging problems over time? Does the project focus on core subject concepts? Are we providing the right instruction and support? Do students aim to produce high-quality work? Have you ever noticed, that small kids starting their journey of school are burdened with heavy bags?? We try to cram them with ABCD and number system in their initial level of curriculum. Is that the right approach?? According to Dr Tan Aimei, Children’s education should begin with 3Hs as Head (knowledge and skills), Heart (values and emotions) and Hands (participation and contribution). The 3H framework helps students think about what they are doing and learning. It helps them to learn by doing. For example, the 3H approach at Si Ling Primary School helps students develop the ability to think creatively and critically in solving environmental problems, communicate and work effectively in teams, and have a strong conviction in bettering the environment. Along similar lines, we at ThinkNow Classroom focus on a framework which makes students break free from conventional form of learning and ideate solutions to any problem thrown at them in real-life.
