I had the pleasure of working with Chia Suan Chong on the Voices series for National Geographic Learning. She's become my friend, muse, and probably my most sketchnoted speaker! Good thing it's impossible to get bored of hearing her speak! She's one of the most engaging presenters I know. This is the sketchnote I did of her session at English UK North '22. Often culture in class can just be the tip of the iceberg. Chia pointed out that culture is fluid. Cross-cultural communication is not about adhering to a list of do's and don'ts or stereotypes. It's about adapting behaviours in different contexts. Everyone is different and people have their own unique cultures which change and diversify in certain situations. How do you teach culture and intercultural communication in your classroom? If you'd like to incorporate more intercultural communication skills into the classroom, the National Geographic Learning Voices series has it covered! ??You are not a drop in the ocean. You are the entire ocean in a drop. ~Rumi ?? Rumi’s quote can be a powerful source of inspiration for English learners, particularly in emphasizing the importance of their individual potential and the unique contributions they bring to the learning process. ?? Emerging English learners often face challenges that can make them feel small or overwhelmed, like just one drop in a vast ocean of language and cultural barriers. ??Rumi’s quote serves as a reminder that each student carries within them an immense capacity for growth, learning, and success. ??Just as a single drop reflects the entire ocean, each learner has the potential to master a new language and contribute richly to the world around them. ??This perspective encourages students to see themselves not as limited by their current abilities but as full of potential and capable of achieving their goals. #education #inspiration #educators #languages #leadership

A message from TESOL ITALY MARCHE GROUP's new coordinator, Simeon Cooper... Tired of the same old "Where did you go on holidays over the summer?" question? Remember that our words matter, so be mindful! As educators, we have the power to shape young minds. Our language can inspire, uplift, or inadvertently harm. By being mindful of our words, we can create a positive and inclusive learning environment where students feel valued and respected. Here are some alternative icebreakers to get your students talking: "What's the most interesting thing you learned this summer?" “What was your favourite thing you did over the summer?” “What was the funniest thing that happened to you over the summer?” “What was the most boring thing you did over the summer?” The question "What was the most boring thing you did over the summer?" is my personal favorite. It can be a great icebreaker because it's relatable, funny, and can lead to interesting conversations. It also helps everyone feel included, even if they didn't have an exciting summer. Give these a try and see how your students respond! Let's make this school year a little more fun and engaging! #joinTESOLITALY

At last week's CALSA (California Association of Latino Superintendents & Administrators) event, David Noyes, our Head of Curriculum, listened to a keynote speaker about equitable instruction for multilingual learners. The speaker's comments about today’s overemphasis on assessments and underemphasis on high-quality instruction resonated with him as a veteran teacher of #MultilingualLearners. The keynote speaker said something like (loosely paraphrased): A test is just a snapshot. Regardless of high scores, serving #EnglishLearners quality instruction with quality resources is what’s important. That’s equity. In other words, for equitable instruction to occur, teachers must be equipped with high-quality instructional resources. From our view, equitable instructional resources for middle and high school #ELLs should feature:?? ?? Culturally relevant (both asset-based and age-appropriate) content that engages and doesn’t alienate multilingual learners ?? Explicit instruction of English language development standards at the right level of rigor to help #MLLs reach timely redesignation. ?? Scaffolded multi-sensory instruction to ensure all levels of learners can access learning The Language Tree Online hybrid ELD curriculum supports equitable instruction through standards-based lessons that meet English learners at their individual levels. I gained this badge for the successful completion of the Online Professional English Network’s (OPEN) Integrating Critical Thinking Course, instructed by World Learning, and sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. In this 64-hour Global Online Course, I used experiential learning to analyze personal experiences and classroom resources and think critically about the cultural assumptions and viewpoints embedded in my teaching content and process. I examined myself as a cultural being. Course topics included Culture, Critical Thinking, Multiple Perspectives, Intercultural Communication, Lesson Planning for my Context, and Teaching Critical Thinking.

I recently participated in an English language teaching conference hosted by Oxford University Press , featuring Hannah Simmons, who spoke on "Playful Pathways: The Power of Learning through Play for All Ages." ??The session was eye-opening, emphasizing how a playful, student-led approach can transform language learning. Rather than relying on traditional, teacher-dominant methods, Simmons advocated for a more interactive style. ??This method not only makes learning more enjoyable but also builds student confidence and encourages participation, leading to a more effective educational experience. I came away convinced that incorporating play into learning can break down barriers and significantly enhance language acquisition. If you're interested in a better way to engage learners, this approach is worth exploring. ?? I'd like to thank Oxford University Press for arranging this conference, which supported the professional development of English language instructors worldwide. #englishlanguage #teachinginstruction #languagelearning #professionaldevelopment #confidencebuilding #learning #careergrowth #positiveapproach #englishteacher #instructors #ielts #englishlearning
