The city powers itself like an independent island in a sea of cities served by a for-profit utility, San Diego Gas & Electric. Lower electric delivery charges. No franchise fees.? That’s how proponents for Power San Diego envision a future not-for-profit electric utility to replace SDG&E. Their foot soldiers are the clipboard-bearing activists patrolling outside Petco Park, Target stores and San Diego farmers markets this year, asking residents to “fire SDG&E,” in other words, join the island. That might sound attractive to residents of a city?with record-breaking electricity prices,?some of the highest in the country. Last year, California regulators undermined a program that school districts use to install solar on rooftops and parking lots to save money and finance sustainability projects. The current situation in the California Public Utilities Commission is Shameful. The current set of Administrative Judges have been Bought and Paid for PG&E, SCE, and SDG&E (the major CA IOUs). This article is a straightforward AND very depressing read - the key paragraph is the following - "Now these groups fear that Monday’s proposed decision from?CPUC?Administrative Law Judge Kelly A. Hymes — who also crafted the?CPUC’s rooftop-solar decision and another decision slashing compensation for shared solar systems for?multifamily properties, schools and farms?in most of the state — will cut off what may be the last viable avenue for non-utility-scale solar in a?state that’s still far off pace to meet its clean-energy goals." We are allowing the IOUs to craft a world in which all solar is Centralized and Owned by the IOUs. Sad and Shameful.

80% of the UK lives in urban areas, and so community owned energy has huge potential in both urban and rural areas across the country. The Great British Energy Bill will be discussed on Thursday (10/10/24) and there will be an amendment proposed by Wera Hobhouse to ensure that community energy is included. MPs will have until then to sign the amendment. The more MPs that throw their weight behind it, the greater our chances of persuading the Government to include it in the Bill. Please write to your MP now. Ask them to ‘Please sign Wera Hobhouse MP’s cross-party amendment that will include supporting community energy in the Great British Energy Bill.' This is one of those articles that creates cynics. #Schools need to save all the money they can, yet California Governor Newsome [who appoints the #CPUC who the make utility rates] vetoed #SB1374. He decided that schools should sell the solar power THAT THEY MAKE, when they are using power and kids are in (like 12pm) to the utility at the lowest wholesale rate ( like $.03 ). Then they must buy power back that very second for a full commercial rate ( like $.11 plus transmission). Really? C'mon. That's not even a good rate discount. Why can't we let schools use the solar kWh's they create to avoid buying #power? They could be a community resilience point during an emergency. This will hurt many solar installs at schools.
