Southern white elites suppress Black political power in order to maintain a Southern economic model that is #RootedinRacism. They use tactics like: ?? violence ?? voter suppression ?? gerrymandering ?? mass incarceration ?? local preemption laws You might think these methods are only seen in the history books, but that's not true. A 2022 study shows that voters from Black neighborhoods waited 29% longer and were 74% more likely to spend over 30 min at their polling place compared with voters from white neighborhoods. But targeted policies can dismantle racist barriers to political participation and disrupt this cycle of political suppression! We need to strengthen civil rights protections and ensure ALL Southerners can enjoy political and economic equality ????????? https://lnkd.in/eE9Zr5cX

Voter suppression makes the racist and anti-worker Southern model possible - https://lnkd.in/grETmGVQ Black voter disenfranchisement remains a key feature of the racist and anti-worker Southern economic development model today. However, periods of progress toward Black political empowerment show that targeted policy action has the power to dismantle racist barriers to political participation and disrupt the cycle of political suppression and economic exploitation. From the abolition of slavery until now, Southern white elites?have used a slew of tactics to suppress Black political power and secure their economic interests—including violence,?voter suppression, gerrymandering, felony disenfranchisement, and local preemption laws. Black voter disenfranchisement remains a key feature of the racist and anti-worker Southern economic development model today. However, periods of progress toward Black political empowerment, such as during Reconstruction and the Civil Rights Movement—though met with fierce suppression—show that targeted policy action has the power to dismantle racist barriers to political participation and disrupt the cycle of political suppression and economic exploitation. While significant advances have been made over the last century, a resurgent backlash underscores the need to strengthen civil rights protections and ensure all Southern workers and their families can enjoy political and economic equality.

In my 84th year… I am old enough to remember… “Separate, but equal.” This post is NOT meant to defend this concept. Slavery is evil. It was * always* evil. In a few words, I hope to communicate some concepts that universally seem to escape most, if not all racial commentaries… SLAVERY IN THE SOUTH… 1. Up until the early 1800s, Southern landowners *employed* American Indians to work their fields. They could quit at any time, but why would they? They had guaranteed supplies of food and clothing and shelter! And Metal tools to work with! 2. The mosquito, spreader of many diseases, especially malaria, is *not endemic* to the Americas. 3. In the early 1800s, a ship arrived from Europe… via Africa… with a small stowaway... The MALARIA- LADEN MOSQUITO. 4. Many Europeans were resistant to Malaria. American Indians had no such resistance and their deaths were near 100%. Estimated Malaria deaths were in the 4-6 Million region! 5. Many Islamic businessman-residents in the Mediterranean area were involved in Euro-African slavery. 6. They started exporting African slaves… at tremendous profits… to Southern… and otherwise bankrupt… landowners. 7. These slaves flourished and are the base for most of America’s black population.

https://lnkd.in/dtdUEB_2 #uspolitics #usdemocracy Long read, just an excerpt. The claim of a “mandate” is hogwash. Voters did choose a trifecta, but I suspect at great cost concerning liberty and Constitutional rights for some. “ The United States may reach a point where the best it can hope for is to shore up democracy and inclusion in some states while abandoning others to a less democratic and inclusive future. This is, after all, what occurred under Jim Crow for eight decades. But America is not at this point yet, and an advocacy style that pushes the country closer to such a dystopic fate is in no way helpful to the goals of social justice. Instead, intense mobilization efforts built around a positive future vision are needed to galvanize voters without exacerbating antidemocratic attitudes.”

Since the 1870s, during the reconstruction of the American government after the Civil War, white reactionaries insisted that opening the vote to anyone but white men would result in socialism. For the radical extremists who have taken over the Republican Party, getting rid of the modern government that regulates business, provides a basic social safety net, promotes infrastructure, and protects civil rights is now gospel as they try to replace it with Christian nationalism. But that active government remains popular. That popularity was reflected today as Republicans continued to take credit for laws passed by Democrats to maintain or expand an active government. The stakes have never been higher. Details in today’s HCR Letter. https://lnkd.in/eT-gYYhb

As we reflect on the outcomes of the 2024 election, an unsettling narrative has emerged. Once again, communities of color find themselves targeted by a familiar voter blame game. This time, some have pointed fingers at Arab Americans and Latinos, casting them as the latest scapegoats for electoral outcomes. At Healing Equity United, we believe it’s critical to recognize this blame game for what it is: a divisive tactic rooted in white supremacy, designed to pit BlPOC communities against each other. When we place responsibility on specific communities for broader societal issues, we perpetuate a cycle of polarization and distract from the systemic barriers that continue to uphold inequity and exclusion. Rather than searching for someone to blame, we should turn our attention to the shared struggles and aligned aspirations of all marginalized communities. We need to focus on building coalitions, fostering solidarity, and understanding that our power comes from unity, not division. Let’s keep advocating for accountability, justice, and inclusion—not just in the voting booth but in every aspect of society. Together, we can work to dismantle the structures that seek to divide us. #DEI #DEIB #Election2024 #blamegame #Democrats #solidarity #community #racialjustice https://lnkd.in/eksCRemH

I've noticed some disheartening behavior lately, with African-American men making derogatory comments about the Democratic Party. It's important to remember that this party represents the majority of low-income, working-class, and middle-class individuals, including our grandparents, parents, sisters, brothers, cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends. Some have mentioned financial gains with the Republicans, but I urge you to consider whether tax cuts and bonuses are worth compromising your values. It's crucial to support a party that fights for all US citizens, especially considering the challenges black men face in society. We must not forget the systemic obstacles that many in our community face, from racial profiling to employment discrimination. It's time to stand together and support leaders representing and uplifting our community. Criticizing without constructive engagement does little to further our collective goals. Let's empower ourselves and our community by encouraging voter registration and engagement in upcoming elections. Together, we can protect our rights, preserve democracy, and secure a better future for all. #Empowerment #CommunityUnity #VoterEngagement #Votebluetosavesamerica ??

Because a Republican liberated African Americans, most freed slaves became members of the GOP. Despite the vast research done on the African American influence in the Democratic Party, comparably little has been done on what led them to become part of the Democratic Party in the first place. This post offers an overview of the rich political history of the African American experience from the 15th Amendment’s ratification in 1870 to the 1936 presidential election. The research will reveal how Republican apathy, depression era desperation and Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s charismatic message of relief and hope played a vital role to the historical shift of the African American voting bloc from the Republican to the Democratic Party. Democrats eventually came to support the voting rights of African Americans. This influenced African Americans to switch Parties from Republican to Democrat. Democrats came to support welfare, food stamps and Medicaid. Since most African Americans have a median net worth of under $30,000, the majority of African Americans support the Democrat Party. Prior to integration the majority of African Americans were entrepreneurial. After desegregation a high percentage of African Americans became dependent upon corporate America for sustenance. In 2024, the vast majority of African Americans are members of the Democrat Party. So much so, that no Democrat candidate can win the Presidency without the support of the African American community. Former President Donald J. Trump has been shaving off percentages of African American support which threatens President Joe Biden’s re-election.

In a time when our democracy feels strained, we can’t ignore the rising influence of extremist policies. They threaten to take us backward on issues that impact all Americans—justice, equality, economic opportunity, and more. As we look toward the future, let’s remain vigilant and unified in our fight for a country that honors its promise to everyone. A healthy democracy means staying informed, standing together, and holding leaders accountable to serve all the people. #DefendDemocracy

As we head into an election year, the stakes couldn’t be higher for democracy, and we believe that defending democracy doesn’t start or stop at the ballot box. Our grantees are community builders, voter educators, and grassroots organizers, working year-round to advance racial, gender, and economic justice. Groups like ProGeorgia and the Mississippi Black Women's Roundtable are making strides to ensure that historically underrepresented communities have a voice—not just in this election year, but every year. As funders, we understand that supporting civic engagement during election cycles is crucial—but so is supporting the infrastructure that keeps these movements thriving when the cameras are off. The fight for democracy is ongoing, and investing in community power is key to transformative change.
