Insights from the Network City and Landscape Forum and?Cycling Research Board Annual?Meeting From September 4 to 6, 2024, Zurich (Switzerland) became the epicenter of cycling innovation as it hosted the Network City and Landscape (NSL)?Forum & Cycling Research Board Annual Meeting (CRBAM). The NSL Forum, held at ETH Zurich, focused on “Digital Twins for Europe’s Future Mobility.” This theme emphasized the need for designs that prioritize micro-mobility in response to the climate crisis. Keynote speakers and experts discussed the role of digital twins in urban planning, aiming to create more sustainable and efficient cities. The CRBAM sessions, held on September 5 and 6, featured a variety of interactive formats designed to foster creativity and collaboration. Participants engaged in discussions on innovative methodologies, critical approaches to transport technology, and the promotion of cycling as a sustainable mode of transport. I presented on ISCYCLE, highlighting the potential for e-bikes to significantly impact urban travel patterns. My talk sparked engaging discussions among attendees, emphasizing the importance of integrating cycling into urban planning to promote healthier and more sustainable cities.

?? The growing importance of cycling data is evident, as noted by CIE project manager Samuel Pierce, partner of MegaBITS, during Velo-city conference Ghent. "I was constantly reminded about the lack of cycling data available to inform better policy making for cycling. Whether it be for safer infrastructure or better services such as cycle logistics operations, it was clear that the lack of data is impeding more and better cycling." ??♀? At Velo-City, MegaBITS was present during a session organized by Cycling Industries Europe on “Floating Bike Data”. This data type captures the GPS trace of cycling trips. When aggregated with the data from many other cyclists, this information can be used by policy makers to plan out better cycling infrastructure and networks within a city or region. ?? During this session partners from the MegaBITS project (including the project coordinators Mobycon and the implementing partner the Gemeente Enschede), Vianova I/O and Strava Metro elaborated on what Floating Bike Data is (Mobycon), how it is being collected (in the city of Enschede) and how it can not only be analysed, but how insights could be drawn from this data for better cycling infrastructure, community development and urban planning and infrastructure policy (Vianova and Strava). #MegaBITS #VC24 #interregnorthsea #CyclingData #FloatingBikeData

This is the question Niels van Oort, Hans Van Lint, and I tackle in our latest study. We introduce a method to identify most relevant locations for cycle-and-ride infrastructure (bicycle parking and cycle lanes) from an accessibility perspective. The station has 3,300 parking spaces, providing a secure place for cyclists to leave their bikes. It also offers repair services and rentals. This improves the cycling experience and encourages more people to ride. Muenster's approach shows the benefits of comprehensive planning. The city integrates cycling facilities with other modes of transport seamlessly.
