It’s a high-profile and sensitive issue along the Southern California border with Mexico—the Tijuana River Estuary is in trouble. Raw sewage, sediment buildup, and pollution threaten our local ecosystem. Researchers are racing against time, studying tidal flows and pollutant movements to uncover solutions that could save endangered species, restore habitats, and protect coastal communities. If you haven’t had a chance to catch this blog post yet, it's worth the read. You'll learn how data collected by some of our innovative SonTek - a Xylem Brand ADCP technology is being used to help scientists make critical, time-sensitive restoration decisions. What do glitter and car tyres have in common? ??? The answer is: they’re both sources of microplastics. Over the last couple of years, there have been widespread concerns over the impact of microplastics on marine life, terrestrial ecosystems, and human health. How is the European Union trying to fight microplastics? In his blog text, Stepien Adam from our partner University of Lapland sheds light on this question. ?? ?? ?? To meet 2050 net-zero targets, large-scale carbon removal is essential. ?? Oceans are the world’s largest carbon dioxide sink, with the capacity to store about 50 times more carbon dioxide than the atmosphere. The B.C. Centre for Innovation and Clean Energy (CICE) is supporting pilots and field trials aimed at removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through ocean-based methods. These projects, led by Planetary Technologies and Coastal Carbon, will evaluate the effectiveness of ocean carbon dioxide removal, and measure the impact on coastal communities and marine environments. #2024ConservationWin: This past field season, our national carbon measurement training program took flight—literally! ?? Using drones to map forests and calculate tree biomass, and coring tools to sample soil and peat, we’re helping communities unlock the power of their landscapes. From coast to coast, we trained community members to measure carbon in forests, vegetation, and soils—and launched a free online learning library to support their land-use decisions: https://lnkd.in/gsTPZpcQ ???? Together, we’re building knowledge to protect the planet.
