Healthcare solutions are developing rapidly, yet gaps in access prevent care from reaching everyone equally. So, I was excited when Drexel University president John Fry invited Johnson & Johnson to speak at its 2024 Arts and Sciences Symposium on how to improve health equity. I was joined on stage by three J&J business leaders and health equity champions: Michelle Kramer and Danielle De Feo (both proud Drexel alumnae) and Howard Reid, our Head of Global Health Equity. Our discussion focused on how closing the gap between communities and care demands awareness, collaboration, and innovation. This means: ?Consulting with patient advocates to gain deeper insights into specific challenges. ?Collaborating with community-centered partners to improve care. ?Building a diverse healthcare workforce to treat. Grateful and Inspired by an Incredible Opportunity I’m deeply thankful to the friends who connected me with RFK Jr. (Bobby Kennedy), nominee for Secretary of Health and Human Services. It was an honor to have him review some of my ideas and connect me with his brilliant policy team. What stood out during our discussions was the team’s sharpness, “get-it-done” mindset, and openness to exploring new approaches—qualities that make me optimistic about driving meaningful change in healthcare. I shared five policy proposals with the team, and what was supposed to be a 30-minute call ran well over an hour. The highlight? Hearing that my ideas were described as the freshest and most insightful they’d encountered. I was motivated by their request to further extrapolate on three of these ideas, and receiving the attached formal recognition email was truly humbling. This feels like a generational opportunity to address systemic challenges in healthcare, and I’d love to invite this erudite community to share any ideas (please DM me with specific ideas. Maybe we can all join the conversation). Key areas I am focusing on by priority: 1. Aligning Incentives: How can we restructure incentives for payors, providers, and patients to prioritize keeping people healthy rather than profiting from illness? 2. Data Sharing for Cures: What can we do to enable data sharing across pharma and medtech to drive population-benefiting cures rather than locking discoveries as proprietary IP? 3. Promoting Healthier Lifestyles: What programs, policies, and incentives can guide people toward better choices in nutrition, activity, mindfulness, and sleep? I’m excited by the potential to rethink and rebuild a better health ecosystem. Ps: I believe in the benefits of vaccines and the advance of science, having led future of health efforts and an innovator in this space. But differences make us stronger.

?? As the snow fell in Nashville, the Council Fellows gathered virtually for the second day of orientation. Council Fellows program Senior Director Lydie Marc provided an overview of the upcoming session topics including innovation in healthcare, cost of care, health equity, the industry’s future, and what opportunities lay ahead in preparing for the next generation. Council Fellows were encouraged to leverage the expertise within the class of 2025 and to embrace productive disagreement in upcoming sessions. Today’s session featured a panel discussion led by former U.S. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, M.D., who founded the Council Fellows program in 2013. Senator Frist emphasized the importance of Nashville’s healthcare ecosystem and the collaboration fostered through initiatives like the Fellows program. Program alumni Puneet Singh, CEO of CareBridge and Mike Uchrin, CEO and Co-Founder of Monogram Health Health joined Dr. Frist as panelists. Both emphasized the importance of specialized hospital care and robust transition programs to improve patient outcomes. The conversation also addressed the challenges of scaling operations while maintaining quality, balancing growth and profitability, and how strategic partnerships and innovation enable sustainable success. This engaging discussion underscored the role of mentorship, collaboration, and a future-focused approach in building a thriving healthcare ecosystem. Stepping into 2025: My Vision for Public Health As we welcome 2025, I find myself reflecting on the immense potential public health holds to shape healthier and more equitable communities. Although my professional journey has yet to lead me directly into public health, my academic background and deep interest in health systems continue to inspire me to make an impact. Here’s what I envision for public health this year and beyond: 1. Health Equity at the Core No matter where someone lives or what their circumstances are, everyone deserves access to quality healthcare. I’m passionate about exploring ways to bridge gaps in healthcare delivery and ensuring equity becomes a priority in all health policies. 2. Community-Centered Interventions I firmly believe that sustainable health solutions begin at the grassroots level. My interest lies in understanding how community-led initiatives can address issues like chronic disease management, mental health, and health promotion. 3. Prevention Over Cure Public health is a proactive field, and I’m drawn to strategies that focus on prevention—be it through vaccination programs, education on healthy lifestyles, or addressing environmental health challenges. 4. Harnessing Technology for Change I’m fascinated by how technology is transforming healthcare. From telehealth to data-driven policy-making, I’m eager to learn more about how innovation can improve health outcomes for all. 5. Learning and Contributing While I may not yet have professional experience in public health, I am actively seeking opportunities to grow, whether through volunteering, research, or collaborative projects. My goal is to apply my background and skills to contribute meaningfully to this field. Public health is not just a career path—it’s a calling to make a difference. I look forward to connecting with like-minded individuals and organizations in 2025, sharing knowledge, and contributing to a healthier future for all. In the ever-evolving world of healthcare, especially with an election looming, the courage to make change happen is paramount. Today, it is #NationalTakeAChanceDay! ?Zoe Lord and I thought it was the perfect time to reflect on the transformative power of making small changes and being courageous. What a great prompt to do something different today that will make a positive change. Whether it’s something small or large, every intervention contributes to a better NHS. Anyone and everyone can be a Change Agent. A Change Agent is someone who is actively looking to make a positive difference and we can all be this person. The path to change can be fraught with obstacles, from bureaucratic resistance to resource constraints but within every situation there is space to do something different. If you want to know more about being a Change Agent and connect with other change makers, follow NHS Horizons , and take a look at Horizons School for Change Agents. Small yet powerful things you can do today could be… 1)???Speaking up – having courageous conversations with others about making a difference and what could be different in your work environment. 2)???Creating Space for Others to Speak Up – creating psychologically safe and inclusive environments so that diverse views are heard and valued. 3)???Practice Listening – Practice active and deep listening, especially with colleagues from different areas of the organisation or those who might hold differing viewpoints. 4)???Building New Relationships and Fostering Collaboration - Actively seek opportunities to connect with and understand the roles and challenges of other departments or specialties. Each action, while seemingly simple, involves doing something different and in doing so, they can have a profound impact on creating a more dynamic and responsive NHS. As we acknowledge #NationalTakeAChanceDay let’s commit to being catalysts for positive change in the NHS. I am going to be focusing on creating a psychologically safe space to have open and honest conversations. Each action we all take, no matter how small, contributes to a larger wave of transformation that can vastly improve our healthcare system. Whether it's initiating a courageous conversation, fostering a more inclusive environment, practicing deep listening or joining the School for Change Agents, all efforts create a ripple effect that extends far beyond the visible.
